KHNP Pushes Ahead with Massive Solar Farm Project in Goheung
Strikes MOU on the joint development of a 300MW solar farm with Hyundai Energy Solutions and two others

President Chung Jae-hoon of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power. (KHNP)

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) decided to implement a project to build a massive photovoltaic power farm using a large-sized salt-affect land in the Haechang Bay area in Goheung, Jeollanam-do.

KHNP signed an MOU on the joint development of a 300MW photovoltaic power plant on a salt-affected land in the Haechang Bay area with three companies, including Hyundai Energy Solutions and Haemil Energy on Dec. 28.

A KHNP official said the project will cost about 377 billion won, and It will be launched next November. The solar farm is to be dedicated in October 2023.

The photovoltaic power plant will be capable of generating 370,000 MWh annually, an equivalent to electricity 34,800 households in Goheung County use for three years, the official said.

Salt-affected farming areas have high salinity among reclamation sites, so they may be made available as temporary sites of solar farms, and site rents will be paid to farming residents, thus contributing to not only offering stable incomes to them bust also creating jobs, the official said.

KHNP said the power company plans to have abundant discussions with Goheung County and residents of the region so that it does not affect the environment adversely.

The affected land can be reused as a farmland after it is used for the operation of a solar farm for 20 years, KHNP said.

KHNP Rated at 1st Class Grade in 2020 Integrity Survey of Public Entities

KHNP was awarded a 1st class grade at the 2020 integrity survey among public entities, conducted by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC).

KHNP said the power company was evaluated highly for conducting integrity activities with regional communities and cooperative companies and continuing activities to raise its integrity levels like the facilitating of audit based on prior consultation.

KHNP received the presidential award for the fourth consecutive year in recognition of its contribution to the expanding of the private sector¡¯s investments by the establishing and implementing policies to nurture the materials, parts and equipment sectors.

KHNP inaugurated a task force responsible for localizing parts and equipment late last year. The power company designed 100 tasks and invested 100 billion won in localization R&D projects.

KHNP has so far struck contracts on 26 tasks worth a combined 26 billion won with its cooperative SMEs.

Chung said its support to localization R&D not only contribute to raising SMEs¡¯ technology levels, but also to the efficient operation of power plants on the back of the timely supply of materials, parts and equipment.
