Hyundai Oilbank, a refinery company, is introducing digital transformation at overall aspects of management.
The refinery company plans to transform itself into a smart company through digitalization of all areas, ranging from not only smart factory in production to personnel management, financing, sales, and public relations.
Hyundai Oilbank established a detailed five-year plan to implement digital transformation over five years with the goal of completing the establishment of a smart company by 2025.
In an initial stage, Hyundai Oilbank will introduce an office automation program in stead of eliminating manual work of core tasks such as personnel management, financing, sales and production.
Officials in charge have so far put data through manual Excel work one by one but robotic process automation (RPA) will make a substitution down the road. Even automation of verification is expected to minimize errors, a Hyundai Oilbank official said.
On-site officials are no longer required to produce and present to management multitudes of reports concerning production, quality, facilities every morning.
It takes more than one year to retrieve raw datasets from several systems for producing reports, but most reports will be made automatically by RPA. Refinery plants normally produce large volumes of data in process, facility and safety environment areas.

Hyundail Oilbank¡¯s major processes have advanced process control (APC) in place in a preparatory step to introduce smart factory. The APC technology is usually introduced for the purpose of maximizing the profit by increasing the operation efficiency.
Hyundai Oilbank will be the first refinery in Korea to introduce an in-house self-driving patrol vehicle, outfitted with IoT and AI technologies. The unmanned patrol vehicle will adopt GPS and harmful gas detection sensors.
A program in which AI will diagnose and control facilities will be in place. With the introduction of the program, AI will be in charge of monitoring and basic diagnosis while officials will be charged with specialized diagnosis.
Chun Kyung-sun, head of Hyundai Oilbank¡¯s Digital Stratregy Division, said Hyundai Oilbank will create an environment in which work will be performed without restrictions of space and time through digital technology, and the building of a smart factory will reduce costs by an estimated maximum of 130 billion won annually.

Hyundai Oilbank to Expand EV Car Charging Stations to 299 by 2023
Hyundai Oilbank plans to expand the number of high-speed EV car charging stations at directly operated gas stations from current 20 to 200 by 2023.
To this end, Hyundai Oilbank struck a partnership agreement with Charzin, an EV car charger maker, to install EV chargers with a capacity of more than 100kw in the Seoul metropolitan area on Oct. 7.
Hyundai Oilbank plans to secure a network of EV charging stations across the nation at area such as logistics centers of distribution companies, drive-through outlets, and large-sized convenience stores in an preemptive step to dominate the EV truck market in which demand is on the rise.
