The Korean construction industry marked the 2020 Construction Day anniversary at the Construction Hall in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul, on June 18.
The anniversary event, held under the theme ¡°The Construction Industry Unfolds a Hopeful Korea,¡± suggested a new vision for the construction industry, which has experienced hardship caused by COVID-19.
Among roughly 300 people on hand at the event were Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, 1st Vice Minister Park Sun-ho of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), and Chairman Kim Sang-soo of the Federation of Construction Associations (FCA).
In his commemorative speech, FCA Chairman Kim said, ¡°COVID-19 will serve as a watershed opportunity to advance the progress of the 4th Industrial Revolution and the construction industry will be an opportunity to create a new growth engine.¡±
He said the construction industry will make a leap forward anew by overcoming this crisis.
In his congratulatory speech, Prime Minister Chung extended praise for the achievements the construction industry has made so far. He urged the industry to strive to make the construction industry an advanced and safe one in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Orders and other government prizes were presented to people who were awarded for contributing to the development of the construction industry. The Order of Industrial Service Merit, Gold Tower went to President Yoon Hyun-woo of Samyang Construction and President Noh Suk-soon of Wonyoung Construction.
Executive Vice President Woo Cheol-shik of Tae Young E&C was honored with the Order of Industrial Service Merit, Silver Tower while President Kim Won-yeol of Mukyung E&C and President Hwang Keun-soon of Every Saving Industry was presented with the Order of Industrial Service Merit, Steel Tower.
The winners of Industrial Service Merit, Tin Tower were President Lee Suh-gil of Daesung and President Kim Im-shik of Namsong Construction.
The winners of Industrial Merit Medal included President Chun Yong-gap of Hwallim. The winners of Presidential Award included President Cho Sung-rae of DRC Cungwon Construction. The winners of Prime Minister¡¯s Award included President Kim Jong-rae of Keonwook Construction.
Over more than 70 years, the construction industry carried out miracles, building and solidifying the foundation for the industrialization of the country, laying the groundwork for the economic ascent of Korea.
Through the construction of major facilities crucial to Korea, including social infrastructure, like highways, residential homes and convenience facilities, the industry has been faithfully fulfilling its duty to improve the people¡¯s welfare and help stabilize their livelihoods. But the industry is struggling to cope with changes and challenges in Korea and abroad.
