Korean Red Ginseng Enhances Strength Against COVID-19

As fears over the spread of the novel coronavirus spread around the world, countries are devoting themselves to overcoming hardships caused by the virus.


On top of state-led efforts, individuals are paying more attention to their personal hygiene, such as wearing face masks and clearing hands with disinfectant.



In Korea, another way of strengthening the body so it can fight off COVID-19 is enjoying popularity. The answer is red ginseng.



Korean Red ginseng is produced by boiling ginseng roots and then drying them. Red ginseng products, recognized by the government for being efficacious for strengthening immunity, have become a popular health functional food.



As COVID-19 began to spread in January, red ginseng sales surged. The reason is that many Koreans consume red ginseng to enhance his or her immunity to prevent contracting COVID-19.



The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), the Korean version of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has found that Ginseng enhances immunity.



At the 8th Seoul International Food Forum in April, Prof. Lee Dong-kwon of Sungkyunkwan University College of Pharmacy said that the influenza virus and coronavirus are RNA viruses which can be modified with ease.


There is ginseng in the United States, China and Japan, but only Korean ginseng is classified as a drug by the World Health Organization. Those who eat ginseng are one-third less likely to catch a cold, Prof. Lee said. He maintained that ginseng played a role of preventing the new Swine Influenza A (H1N1).

One of the best-selling red ginseng products in Korea is “CheongKwanJang Red Ginseng Extract Everytime,” produced by the Korea Ginseng Corp. (KGC).


Cumulative sales surpassed 200 million stick packs, the best-selling one on the world, since it made its debut.

KGC cited ease and portability as the secret of the popularity of CheongKwanJang Red Ginseng Extract Everytime. “CheongKwanJang Red Ginseng Extract Everytime has change time and space paradigm since anyone can eat it with ease any time and any place,” it said.



A KGC official said consumption of red ginseng has increased as a way to enhance immunity due to the spread of COVID-19.
