The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) hosted the Seoul Magok International Conference 2019 under the theme ¡°Magok, Unfurling the Future¡± at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on Dec. 9.




The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) hosted the Seoul Magok International Conference 2019 under the theme ¡°Magok, Unfurling the Future¡± at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on Dec. 9.


The conference was designed to hear and share diverse views from Korean and foreign experts on how to explore the future development of the Magok Industrial Complex, looking to play pivotal roles in the 4th Industrial Revolution and rise to an innovative R&D center, making it a creative and innovative research environment.


The conference brought together experts from digital technology, smart city, global innovation and other sectors to share and communicate diverse views to find new opportunities and values for Magok.

In his opening speech, Vice Mayor II Jin Hee-seon of the Seoul Metropolitan Government said, ¡°The Seoul Magok International Conference 2019 is hoped to serve as an opportunity for tenant companies and research institutes of the Magok Industrial Complex to communicate with each other, particularly looking to explore the future development of the Magok Industrial Complex and find new values and opportunities.¡± President Kim Sei-yong of Seoul Housing & Communities Corp. said, ¡°The Magok District, to be dedicated next year, will be an example of settling a  "'Seoul-style smart city¡¯ model.¡±


Speakers of the conference included Thomas Abell, advisor and chief of digital technology for development at the Asian Development Bank, who spoke about the topic ¡°Digital Technology Trends for Urban Development,¡± President Lee Kwang-jae of the Yeosijae, or Future Consensus Institute, who touched on the topic ¡°Magok Smart City, a core system is local government-industries-knowledge DNA,¡± and Jung Jae, a partner of McKinsey & Company, who spoke about the topic ¡°Smart Cities, Digital Solutions for a More Livable Future.¡±


About 350 people, including those from tenant companies of the Magok Industrial Complex, academia, investors and citizens, participated in the conference.


Speakers of the first session touched on the theme ¡°Magok, Open Up the Smart Future.¡± They touched on topics such as digital technology trends, smart city and global innovations.


The steering committee of the M-Valley Forum, which made its debut this year, participated in the second session held under the theme ¡°Why Magok?¡±


The Seoul Magok International Conference 2019 was the second rendition of the conference, which took place as tenant companies of the Magok Industrial Complex are filing into the industrial real estate.


The latest conference was designed to contribute to reinforcing communications and collaboration among tenant companies of the complex.


Abell of the Asian Development Bank gave a lecture on examples of utilizing digital technology in areas such as urban planning, transport, medical care, education and employment. He is a seasoned expert who has been with the digital technology sector for more than 20 years. Abell shared information about the use of digital technology through the ADB¡¯s regional development program ¡°Strategy 2030.¡±


Jung Jae of McKinsey & Company defined ¡°smart city as a place in which data and digital technology are used to solve public issues among stakeholders and enhance the quality of lives by looking at smart city in a perspective of digital solution for a better future.¡± The McKinsey Global Institute announced a report analyzing three core components of smart city of late and the current development stage of the world¡¯s top 50 smart cities.


Kim Sun-soon, head of the Regional Development Headquarters at the SMG, said, ¡°Magok sees dreams and new possibilities, and we plan to communicate with the Corporate Company Alliance on Smart City Project and provide support to make it a city attracting a stream of youngsters.¡±
