LG Uplus to Launch World¡¯s 1st 5G Cloud VR Game Service
Carrier plans to build related infrastructure by year-end and open 5G cloud VR game experience zones across the nation

LG Uplus demonstrates a 5G-based cloud virtual reality (VR) game service at a 5G-based cloud VR game streaming service experience zone at LG Uplus headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, on July 2.




LG Uplus said on July 2 the telecom service provider was entering the 5G-based cloud 5G game market. Initially, LG Uplus plans to open 5G cloud VR game experience zones at about 90 5G cloud VR game outlet across the nation.


At the experience zones, some 100 games on the on-line digital game platform Steam and popular consol VR games are offered to visitors who wear a head-mounted display (HMD). The games in service include ¡°Arizona Sunshine,¡± ¡°Into the Rhythm,¡± ¡°Counter Fight,¡± ¡°Sirento,¡± ¡°Space Channel 5,¡± and ¡°Mortal Blitz.¡±


The carrier plans to develop more VR game content pieces, which will bring to 20 the games to be streamed by the end of August. LG Uplus plans to offer 5G cloud VR games services via HMD at home. Cloud VR games do not require complicated processes since they are streamed by cloud servers. People can enjoy high quality content pieces via lower-level HMD gadgets.


LG Uplus is collaborating with Lotte World and Kakao VX to develop cloud VR game technologies and expand content. Lotte World has developed some 10 VR games in cooperation with SMEs. Lotte World VR Research Institute is playing a part as a test-bed for the development of 5G cloud games by LG Uplus.


Kakao VX, a subsidiary of Kakao Games, plans to release a theme park concept game based on intellectual properties owned by Friends Games. LG Uplus maintained that it is the first telecom service provider in the world to launch a 5G-based cloud virtual reality (VR) game service.


LG Uplus plans to reinforce its 5G leadership by offering high-quality VR and augmented reality (AR) content based on our 5G network technologies that deliver ultra-low latency, officials with LG Uplus said.
