Hyundai Steel executives are utilizing their vacation time to participate in social contribution activities on a voluntary basis.
A team of Hyundai Steel executives conducted volunteer activities for four days from April 9 in Cartarman, Province of Northern Samar, the Philippines.
Since 2014, Hyundai Steel executives and staff have taken time out to engage in social contribution activities while on vacation to enhance their pride and fulfill their social responsibilities. In particular, Hyundai Steel has been conducting social contribution activities in the Philippines since 2017.
Cartarman, Province of Northern Samar, is a poor, isolated place. There are few outside visitors and it has insufficient tourism revenues, buffeted with frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons sans government support.
Hyundai Steel volunteers visited the place this year where they improved the environment of various shabby facilities, including a job training center, and installed a tap tower system so trainees can drink water.
They also took time out to hold cultural exchanges with kindergarten children such as mask-making, soap bubble plays and other diverse activities.
Won Dae-ro, an employee with the Dangjin Steelworks of Hyundai Steel and a member of the volunteering group, said he was interested in Hyundai Steel executives and staffer¡¯s volunteering activities, and when I came here and found that the surrounding environment is bleak, he thought his decision as a good thing. When he returned, he would do its best in carrying out office work and volunteering activities, he added.
Hyundai Steel launched a project to build a vocational training center to offer on-the-job training and education support to Philippine youth last year. The project has been completed. The vocational training center is to offer classes suitable for landing jobs and launching startups.
At a stage of planning, Hyundai Steel conducted a demand survey for vocational training to provide educational opportunities suiting Philippine youths. Based on the outcomes of the survey of some 1,000 youth, the vocational training center is to open classes for woodwork, stonemason¡¯s work, welding, and motorcycle repair.
Hyundai Steel has been carrying out social contribution activities in the Philippines in cooperation with the international relief organization Plan Korea since 2017, thus not only contributing to the development of the local community, but also expanding its network of sharing and sympathy.
Dangjin Steelworks Union¡¯s USR Campaign
Hyundai Steel Dangjin Steelworks Union conducted a union social responsibility (USR) drive on the occasion of the Month of Family in May.
Ten Unionists, including Lee Kyung-yeon, head of the trade union branch, delivered carnations they themselves made for the elderly who live alone along with gifts. They met with 40 senior citizens living in the local community and took time out in mingling with the elderly so as to ease their solitude.
