POSCO has launched the #SteelSaveEarth drive to make the sustainability of steel known to the public. The campaign is designed to publicize steel as an environmentally viable material, especially when the life-cycle assessment is taken into account, which assesses the environmental impacts of materials over their full life cycle – from raw material procurement to distribution and recycling.
POSCO held ¡°Beautiful Mint Life 2019¡± a music festival at Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Seoul on May 11-12. During the event, the steelmaker installed a publicity booth to promote eco-friendliness of steel. POSCO also coincided with events to exchange vacant plastic bottles with tumblers made of stainless steel and make wreaths made of leftover steel products.
On May 11, POSCO also hosted an event to ¡°do it yourself¡± to make tumblers at the POSCO Center in Daechi-dong, Seoul.
POSCO kicked off #SteelSaveEarth campaign in commemoration of the Earth Day. Earth Day was founded in 1970 by a U.S Senator, and it has since spread across the globe, being celebrated in more than 193 countries through various coordinated events.
For the Instagram campaign, followers can post photos of their plastic-free lifestyle with the following hashtags: #SteelSaveEarth. To commemorate the April 22 Earth Day, POSCO will select 422 people who will receive travel mugs. These travel mugs were made of POSCO¡¯s stainless steel and designed in collaborating with the trending Instatoon artist @inoo.ari.duri. The campaign will continue until May 15.
Children can make their own travel mugs utilizing @inoo.ari.duris designs and take a photo in front of the campaign wall. POSCO will also participate in the annual sustainability-themed music festival, Beautiful Mint Life festival from May 11 to 12.
On this two-day music festival, POSCO will set up a #SteelSaveEarth campaign booth where POSCO University Student Brand Ambassador will carry out various events to promote steel sustainability.
Processing of steel as a mastic material is extraordinary and eco-friendly. POSCO has developed giga steel, a next-generation steel enough to endure the pressure of more than 100 kilograms of weight per sq. millimeter.
The application of giga steel in making cars could lead to lightening even though it is strong in strength compared to aluminum. Reducing the weight of cars by 10 percent has an effect of improving their mileage by 5 percent through 8 percent, thus cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Figures released by the World Steel Association showed that in the case of producing raw material of 1 kg, steel produced a meager between 2.0 and 2.5 kg in carbon dioxide emissions, compared to aluminum¡¯s comparative figure of 11 through 12.6 kg.
The POSCO Research Institute of Science and Technology inaugurated a fine dust research center designed to take comprehensive measures to cope with fine dust issues on May 9.
