LG Uplus Vice Chairman Ha Hyun-hoe makes a first-hand inspection at one of the telecom service provider¡¯s sales braches to take stock of the 5G project.





LG Uplus has unveiled ¡°100G Switch¡± a homegrown 5G transmission equipment, at the mobile back hole network in the Seoul metropolitan area.


The 100G Switch has been jointly developed by LG Uplus as well as Korean equipment makers Dasan Network Solutions and Ubiquoss. It is a high-performance 5G access device designed to deliver data traffic between 5G mobile base stations and cable networks.


The 100G Switch is considered to be a key part of upgraded 5G network since it is capable of processing quickly 10 times a 46-fold data more than the conventional LTE network, but consumes power similar to the conventional ones.


In July, LG Uplus selected the 100G Switch as one of 5G devices and began to install it at the ¡°Back holes¡± Initially, 450 units have been installed in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas.


Afterward, about 9,000 100G Switch units are to be built at networks across the nation, according to the 5G network buildup schedule. LG Uplus provided billions of won in financial support to the Korean equipment makes for the smooth supply of the 100G Switch units.


LG Uplus is expected to have the traffic control and treatment of 5G network improved, high quality data services guaranteed and preferential service quality offered as the 100G Switch is outfitted with technologies such as segment routing for determining and adjusting traffic routes of each service, virtual private network (VPN) and software definition network (SDN).


Lee Sang-heon in charge of network development at LG Uplus said investments into high-volume cable network need to be made in advance to process huge data of 5G services, and LG Uplus, which has made strenuous efforts to localize the backbone switch, is trying to set examples of shared growth in Korean 5G equipment market with local equipment makers in Korea¡¯s strength areas such as back hole and front hole.

LG Uplus¡¯ ¡®U+ Members¡¯ subscribers have surpassed a milestone of 4 million members in eight months since it made its debut in January. The membership card offers membership discounts, mobile petty money settlements, and the depositing and using of points with affiliated member companies.


The upsurge in the subscribers of the membership card was owed to the adding of affiliated member companies such as Korean Air¡¯s Skypass, the upgrading of an app on users¡¯ experiences, and diverse promotion activities on its own or with affiliated member companies, an LG Uplus official said.


LG Uplus plans to expand practical benefits such as membership discounts, discount coupons and events through exploring of additional affiliated member companies.


The telecom service provide is also improving using environment, function update and system infrastructure to allow more customers to be offered with smoother services.
