The 5.63-km-long Okwon Tunnel, the longest tunnel on the Donghae KTX Line, was successfully cut through.
The Korea Rail Network Authority (KR) announced the successful penetration of the Okwon Tunnel, the longest on the Donghae Line linking Samcheok and Pohang, without any incidents and industrial disasters on Oct.11.
Construction of the tunnel connecting Okwon-ri and Imwon-ri in Wondeok-up, Samcheok City, experienced difficulties such as the flowing of large amounts of water and strata made of weak clay rock, but engineers overcame the obstacles by minimizing blasts and excavations and ensuring a perfect safety and quality management record to make its way through it without any accidents.
The project, which was launched in September 2015, cost a combined 48.4 billion won. It required a combined 112,116 man-days and 21,000 pieces of construction equipment during 37 months of construction, contributing to job creation and invigorating the regional economy. KR is working on the construction of the 166.3 km-long Donghae Line at a cost of 3.24 trillion won. The line is scheduled to be put in service in 2020.
The opening of the line will reduce the time of traveling from Busan to Gangneung by some 150 minutes to three and half hours from six hours for an express bus ride.
The Donghae Line will be connected with the Gangneung Line linking Wonju and Gangneung to establish a Pan-East Coast trunk railroad network, thus maxing out railway transportation efficiency and contributing to regional development.
KR CEO Kim Sang-gyun, attending a ceremony to mark the penetration of the Okwon Tunnel, said, ¡°Thanks to neighborhood residents¡¯ active support and KR¡¯s field officials¡¯ hard work, the Okwon Tunnel, the most difficult construction section of the Pohang-Samcheok line has been cut through in a safe fashion.¡± KR is trying to open the Donghae Line by 2020 on time, contributing to neighborhood residents¡¯ transportation convenience, he said.
