Hosts international convention on universal health coverage and long-term care in Bangkok on Aug. 1 in cooperation with NHSO and JICA
A scene from the international forum on universal health coverage and long-term care hosted jointly by the National Health Insurance Service, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) of Thailand and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)on Aug. 1 in Bangkok, Thailand.
President Kim Yong-ik of the National Health Insurance Service.(NHIS)
The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) jointly hosted an international seminar on universal health coverage and long-term care in Bangkok on Aug. 1 in cooperation with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) of Thailand and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The convention was part of the KNIS¡¯s efforts to share the experiences the NHIS has accumulated in the course of the operation of Korea¡¯s long-term care insurance for the past 10 years, the current status of the care insurance and future tasks with Southeast Asian countries. The seminar took place at the request of the NHSO, which wants to take its cue from Korea¡¯s experiences in the long-term care sector to brace for the advent of Thailand¡¯s aging society slated for 2025.
A report, titled ¡°Health at a Glace Asia and Pacific 2015,¡± which was published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed that even though the portion of people aged 65 or older in Asia countries stood at 8.1 percent, less than half of 16.8 percent, the average of OECD countries, the figure is predicted to post a four-fold jump over the next four decades to surge to 26 percent above the OECD¡¯s average.
The dramatic demographic changes will likely have an impact on not only health and medical care regimes, but also the whole of social security and the national economy. In case of Southeast Asian countries in which universal health coverage is now not available, the states have to grapple with UHC and long-term care policy tasks simultaneously.
The convention was attended by about 400 people, including officials with Southeast Asian affairs of WHO and World Bank, NHSO, and health and medical authorities in Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. The participants exchanged views on Korea¡¯s experiences on the long-term care and Thailand¡¯s preparations on a long-term care insurance.
Kang Myung-ok, head of the Global Cooperation Office at the NHIS, said With the implementation of the joint collaboration project with NHSO and JICA, the NHIS strives to play a leading role in global health coverage by establishing a cooperation regime and carrying out diverse collaboration projects with such international organizations as the WHO and the World Bank.
