AmorePacific, which had been in the doldrums throughout 2017 and the first quarter of 2018, looks as though it is on the way to recovery in the second quarter this year, thanks to its hefty operations abroad including the U.S. and China, two of its major markets overseas.
Fn Guide said on July 3 the Korean cosmetics giant posted 179.6 billion won in operating profit in Q2 this year, up a whopping 76 percent YoY, with sales in the same quarter rising 16.1 percent YoY to 1.398,9 trillion won. Last year, the cosmetics maker did not do well with reductions in Chinese tourist arrivals in Korea due to THAAD retaliatory measures taken by the Chinese government.
The company logged 596.4 billion won in operating profit last, year down 29.7 percent YoY, and its Q1 results this year remained just about the same as the preceding quarter, although the Chinese government made moves to unwind its measures against the THAAD installations in Korea.
The company¡¯s Q1 operating profit was down 26.5 percent YoY, while sales fell 10.3 percent over the same period. Chinese tourist arrivals in Korea from April to May jumped 53.1 percent YoY, boosting sales at duty free shops around the country.
An analyst with NH Investment and Securities said the marketing expenses which were cut in Q1 due to the THAAD issues may have been boosted in Q2, with Q2 sales in the China and ASEAN region rising 22 percent YoY, thanks to the jump in the Chinese tourist arrivals and the moves to ease the THAAD issues in China.
