The nation celebrated the 2018 anniversary of Railway Day on June 28, unlike previous anniversary days, which fell on Sept. 18. A ceremony to mark the 119th anniversary of Railway Day took place at Sejong Center in Seoul with 500 people in attendance, including Minister Kim Hyun-mee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), Chairman Kim Sang-kyun of the Korea Rail Network Authority (KR), Korea Railway Corp. President Oh Young-sik, SR President Lee Seung-ho also attended.
The 2018 anniversary of Railway Day fell on June 28 to celebrate the date of the establishment of the nation¡¯s first railway bureau in 1894, during the Joseon Dynasty.
At a cabinet meeting held May 8, the government changed the anniversary day from Sept. 18 to June 28.
In the previous years, Railway Day was observed in celebration of the Gyeongin Line, the nation¡¯s first 33.2-km-long railway route connecting Noryangjin and Jaemulpo in 1899. Controversy flared up over the celebration of Railway Day to mark the opening of the line, built by Japanese, citing it as a vestige of Japanese colonial rule of Korea.
The celebration of the 2018 anniversary of Railway Day takes on more significance since June 28 marks the first time the nation laid the groundwork to advance its railway system. Previously the country had been isolated from continental Asia as a kind of island. During the inter-Korean summit on April 27, South and North Korea recognized the importance of railway connectivity. On June 8, South Korea became a regular member of the Organization for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD).
During the recent summit talks between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Russian President Putin, railway connectivity emerged as a potential economic cooperation project among South Korea, North Korea and Russia. KORAIL is acceleration steps to connect South Korea¡¯s railway to the Eurasian railroad network by singing an MOU on cooperation with its Russian counterpart. KORAIL President Oh said, ¡°Recognizing public interests of railway as top priority, we make efforts to create social values so that anyone can use railways in a safe and convenient fashion.¡±
The corporation is making preparations to make railways a stepping stone in advancing an era of peace on the Korean Peninsula and advance to the continent, he added.
In her commemorative speech to the anniversary event, MOLIT Minister Kim praised the Korean railways industry¡¯s endless technology innovation. She urged people with railways to do their best with a huge sense of mission and responsibility by placing people¡¯s lives and safety as foremost values.
