Vice Chairman Chang Sae-wook of Dongkuk Steel called for a change in the working style on the officers and employees on the occasion of the steelmaker’s 64th anniversary on July 6 as the steel maker has to adopt the 52-hour weekly working system as the new corporate law calls for.
At a ceremony to mark the founding anniversary at the steelmaker’s Ferrum Tower in Eulzi-ro, downtown Seoul on July 6, what the vice chairman wanted in his congratulatory speech was breaking up the current working system and start a new one not only because of the new working hours, but the need to change the working system due to the U.S. charging high tariffs on foreign import steel products and less demand for steel in the shipbuilding and construction industries hit hard by economic downturn, among others.
Chang said, “All of your should forget about the night shifts, which became a regular shift almost after so many years of working on them and revert to a culture that sees the 9-5 regular work shift as the ordinary one.
He said all of them should throw away the unnecessary work and do the work that will boost the growth of the company. They should be the specialist on at least two areas of work as a multi-specialist as they grapple with challenges ahead, the vice chairman said, adding that the age calls for the people with diverse talents and experts on more than two areas of work.
The vice chairman’s call for change is not unrelated to the steel maker’s deteriorating operation results in recent years. The downturn in the shipbuilding and construction industries led to reductions in the sales of steel products needed by those industries, namely steel plates and steel rods, curtailing the growth of the steel maker. Its operating profit in the Q1 this year fell 64.3 percent to 20.6 billion won.
Chairman Chang Sae-joo has been hard at work to improve the steel maker’s operation since his temporary release in April from jail. He was said to have ordered the reorganization of the company including the establishment of a new office, the Chief Operating Officer(COO), a presidential level office with Managing-Director Kim Yon-kuk named to take over the new position.
Dongkuk Steel’s craftsmanship-‘producing masterpiece steel’ - is the biggest motivation that drives us to manufacture high-value products. The R&D Center established in 2005 is the heart of research and development of Korea’s steel plates, sections, and reinforcing bars.
The Dangjin works operating since 2010 is the advanced base for top quality steel plate production. The eco-friendly Incheon Works has started the operation of the Eco-Arc electric furnace in 2010, and a top of the line high tech rolling mill in 2012 to produce top quality reinforcement bars. Dongkuk Steel is producing best quality products at each of these sites.
In 1965, Dongkuk Steel has as the first Korean private enterprise, started the operation of a blast furnace. Dongkuk Steel is also the first enterprise that installed an electric arc furnace (1966), and a DC electricare furnace (1998) in Korea.
Dongkuk Steel, the pioneer of steel industry, was not satisfied with glories of the past, and continued with the ‘Firsts. ’KS certification of high-strength reinforcing-bars (2009), completion and operation of environmental friendly eco-arc furnace (2010), KS establishment of earthquake resisting reinforcing bars (2011), construction of CSP in Brazil (2012), and many more are the achievements of many “Firsts” which Dongkuk Steel has establ.

동국제강은 6일, 본사가 위치한 을지로 페럼타워에서 창립 64주년 기념식을 가졌다. 장세욱 동국제강 부회장은 창립기념식에서 ‘일하는 방식의 변화’를 강조했다.

장 부회장은 “야근을 당연시 하는 문화를 버리고, 정시 퇴근을 당연 시 하는 문화로 바꿔야 한다. 또한 불필요한 업무를 버리고 효율적으로 일하는 동국제강만의 일하는 스타일을 만들어야 한다”고 강조했다.

또 장 부회장은 “창의적 소통과 몰입으로 업무에 임해달라”고 당부했고, 동국제강의 인재상으로 “새로운 업무라도 도전해 다양성과 전문성을 갖출 수 있는 멀티스페셜리스트가 되어 달라”고 말했다.

장세욱 부회장은 “동국제강의 저력을 믿고 후배들이 창립 100주년을 맞을 수 있도록 하자”고 임직원을 격려했다.  

동국제강은 7월 1일부로 급변하는 경영환경에 대응하고자 신임 COO로 김연극 사장을 선임하고, 기존 사업본부 체제에서 기능별 조직 체제로 개편을 시행했다. 업무 효율을 극대화하고 영업 시너지를 창출하기 위한 구조적 변화였다.

동국제강은 이날 기념식이 끝난 후 오후에는 임직원 모두가 참여하는 ‘피자 파티’ 이벤트를 열어 소통의 시간을 가진다. 또한 본사를 비롯해 인천, 포항, 당진, 부산, 신평 등 각 지역 사업장 임직원들이 인근 아동센터와 사회복지관을 찾아 봉사활동을 진행한다.

동국제강 임직원들로 구성된 ‘나눔지기’ 봉사단은 생필품 전달, 아쿠아리움 체험, 토피어리 만들기 등 다양한 봉사를 통해 지역 사회 나눔 활동을 펼쳤다.

 
창립기념 메시지 요약

 그 동안 수 많은 난관이 있었지만 동국제강 임직원 한 명 한 명이 최선을 다하여 우리는 어려운 가운데 많은 성과를 냈습니다. 재무구조개선약정 조기 졸업, 부채 비율 급감, 신용등급 상향 등이 그 결과물입니다. 우리는 다시 대내외적 많은 변화를 마주하고 있습니다. 대내적으로는 조직 개편을 통한 구조적 변화가 있었고 대외적으로는 주52시간 근무 시행 등 여러 변화의 시기입니다. 

저는 이 자리에서 여러분께 당부하고 싶은 3가지를 말씀 드리겠습니다.

첫 번째. 일하는 방식의 재점검 및 변화가 필요합니다. 야근을 당연시 하는 문화를 버리고, 정시 퇴근을 당연 시 하는 문화로 바꿔야 합니다. 또한 불필요한 업무를 버리고 효율적으로 일해야 합니다. 일하는 방법과 스타일 등 업무 문화의 변화를 통해 불필요한 업무나 야근을 줄이고 효율적으로 일합시다.

두 번째는 소통과 몰입입니다.
소통에는 업무적 소통, 정서적 소통, 창의적 소통이 있는데 저는 이 중에 창의적 소통을 가장 강조하고 싶습니다. 몰입은 중독과 다르며, 창의적 소통과 몰입으로 업무에 임하고, 아이디어를 서로 공유하고 발전시켜 나가면서 경쟁력을 키워 나갑시다.

세 번째는 멀티스페셜리스트가 되자는 것입니다. 예전에 ‘일인 삼역’ 이라는 슬로건을 내건 적이 있는데, 동국제강의 인재상으로 새로운 업무라도 도전해 다양성과 전문성을 갖출 수 있는 멀티스페셜리스트를 제시하고 싶습니다. 한가지 업무에서 스페셜리스트가 되는 것을 넘어, 새로운 업무의 도전을 통해 두 가지 이상의 분야에서 전문가가 됩시다. 다양성과 전문성을 갖춘 인재가 필요한 시대입니다.

창립 64주년을 맞은 여러분 모두 진심으로 축하하며, 동국제강의 저력을 믿고 후배들이 창립 100주년을 맞을 수 있도록 최선을 다합시다.
