Move aims at creating more jobs and help economy to grow with huge contribution to national progress
Chairman Yoon Dae-hi of Korea Credit Guarantee Fund(Kodit)
Korea Credit Guarantee Fund (Kodit) will boost its support of spin-offs substantially through 2020 in a move to see more venture enterprises follow in the footsteps of Naver. Ultimately, the hope is more companies will grow and create jobs to make a contribution to the national economy. The credit guarantee firm has set 250 billion won as the limit for its credit guarantees to the spinoffs under the name of ¡°Spin-off Startup Guarantee Platform,¡± the company announced on May 28.
The company said the program was kicked off in May last year to help the venture units of large and medium-sized firms win more independence and also help the research staff of both national and public research institutions.
Kodit will give them benefits when they are separated from their mother companies to be run as spinoffs. Thohse include discounts on the guarantee fees worth as much as 100 percent depending on the situation.
For 300 million won, the requirement of annual sales will not be applied as Kodit can provide 6 billion won in credit and guarantees to a business firm about to spin off its venture unit.
So far Kodit has provided 52.9 billion won worth of credit guarantees to 50 firms to spin off their venture units through the Spin-off Startup Guarantee Program through April this year. The program kicked off in May last year, an official of Kodit said, adding that they created more jobs than SMEs, which also got similar help from Kodit.
They said Kodit has decided to provide 200 billion won worth of additional credit guarantees and funds under the program until 2020. The spinoffs that had help from Kodit through the program created 34.4 percent more jobs than other business firms.
Kodit also said it is operating the Blue Elite Startup Program to give financial support to the startups set up by the former employees of large corporations and research staff of state research institutions.
Kodit also has been engaged in a project to create an ecology system for spinoffs in cooperation with Samsung Electronics. The credit guarantee provided so far 8.4 billion won worth of guarantees and loans to 11 startups that were spun off under the C-Lab Program run by the giant electronics firm. Kodit signed an agreement with the electronics maker in June, last year, to provide its support to the startups set up under the C-Lab program.
The main purpose of the credit guarantee services is to enable promising Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) without enough collateral to obtain funds and make smooth headway in the financial or business transaction.
In an attempt to meet SMEs' demand for financing service, Korea Credit Guarantee Fund provides enterprises with credit guarantee services for the repayment of liabilities assumed by business enterprises in transactions with other companies or institutions.
By doing so, the credit guarantee services facilitate the financing of SMEs through the credit guarantees and stimulate the sound credit transaction through the efficient management of credit information. Credit guarantee services involve a series of interactions among three parties: the guarantor (Kodit ), the debtor (enterprises), and the creditor (financial institutions). If the debtor defaults, Kodit pays the guarantee obligation to financial institutions in place of the debtor.
Kodit has two kinds of credit insurance services: Bill Insurance Service and Receivables Insurance Service. Kodit introduced Bill Insurance Services in September 1997 and Receivables Insurance Services in March 2004 to protect SMEs from chain reaction bankruptcies arising from dishonored commercial bills or non-payment of receivables for the goods and services that SMEs provided to buyers. In 2014, Kodit underwrote a record 15,208 billion won in Credit Insurance Services.
