Unionists of the Incheon chapter of Hyundai Steel’s labor union post as they are engaged in volunteering activities to extend a helping hand to the elderly who live in solitude.

Hyundai Steel's labor union has been conducting diverse volunteer activities in accordance with social responsibility it declared in 2016.
About 40 members of the Incheon chapter labor union of Hyundai Steel’s Incheon plant, including Kim Jong-chan, union chapter head, visited homes of the elderly who live in solitude in the neighborhood of the plant. They installed gas circuit breakers and other tools to prevent gas leakages and supplied them with fire extinguishers and other safety products on March 30.
The Incheon chapter trade union of Hyundai Steel plans to conduct union social responsibility activities with a focus on ensuring the safety of senior citizens who live alone this year. On the day in March, the volunteer trade union members installed or supplied tools and products designed to protect the elderly from falling and fires. The beneficiary households are vulnerable to fires stemming from deteriorated structures and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The volunteers installed tools designed to prevent accidents, replaced lights with LEDs to cut down on electricity consumption and renovated mosquito window nets to ensure summertime hygienics.
Trade union chapter head Kim said, “I feel happy to visit the homes of the elderly who live alone in the neighborhood of our company and take care of them.” He went on to say that the trade union will commit to conduct more volunteering activities to serve the neighborhood in the days to come.
Meanwhile, the steelmaker’s plant trade union chapters in Suncheon and Pohang also conducted similar volunteer activities on March 18 and 28, respectively. Starting with the installment of safety tools, chapters of Hyundai Steel Trade Union plans to carry diverse volunteering activities tailored to meet each region’s needs this year.
Public Art Strcutures at Mt. Samseon Arboretum
Hyundai Steel held the Hi-Steel ATELIER Showcase at the Mt. Samseon Arboretum and unveiled public art structures there on Apr 11. The steelmaker launched a contest for the establishment of public art structures with eco-friendly design suiting the mountain and a shaded rest area under the theme “Design Woods of Steel” late last year.
The structures were selected via an online vote as a “participatory work.”
The four winning entries of the contest were writer Kim Young-ah’s work, titled “Steel, Sprout,” writer Lee Chun-hee’s work, titled “Comma,” writer Kim Doo-won’s work “Adagio,” and writer Ahn Jung-hyun’s piece “Steel Flower: Petal Steel.”
The winning works were installed at the Picnic Camp of the mountain. What a Dangjin City child saw and felt about the Mt. Samseon Arboretum were translated into patterns put on the floor of an observatory.
The Mt. Samseon Arboretum in Dangjin City, established as a pleasant rest area for Dangjin citizens, boasts of 1,060 plants and fascinating landscapes changing according to each season.

다채로운 봉사활동을 펼쳐 눈길을 끌고 있다.
현대제철 인천공장 노동조합 김종찬 지회장을 비롯한 노조원 40명은

지난달 30일 공장 인근 독거 어르신들의 가정을 방문해 가스차단기, 화재경보기, 가정용 스프레이 소화기 등

화재예방 안전물품과 안전손잡이, 안전매트를 설치하는 봉사활동을 펼쳤다.

현대제철 인천노조는 올해 독거어르신 가정의 안전문화 정착에 중점을 두고 USR 활동을 펼칠 예정이며,

이날 화재, 낙상 등 안전을 위협하는 환경에 무방비로 노출된 채 생활하는 어르신 가정을 찾아

필요한 물품을 지원하고 설치했다.

현대제철 인천노조가 방문한 가구는 건물이 대부분 노후화돼 화재에 취약한 것은 물론

난방을 할 때도 일산화탄소 중독과 화재 등의 위험이 높은 곳이다. 봉사자들은 이 같은 사고를

예방하기 위해 안전물품을 설치하는 한편, 전기절약을 위한 LED등 교체, 여름철 위생관리를 위한

방충망 개보수 작업도 함께 진행했다.

김종찬 지회장은 이날 "회사 인근 독거 어르신 가정을 직접 방문해 보살필 수 있어 보람을 느낀다"며

"앞으로 노동조합이 지역을 위해 더 열심히 봉사해야 겠다는 결심을 하게 됐다"고 말했다.

한편 지난달 18일과 28일에는 순천공장 노동조합과 포항공장 노동조합이 각각 안전물품 설치

봉사활동을 실시했다. 이번 안전물품 설치 활동으로 올해의 봉사활동을 시작한 현대제철 각 공장

노동조합은 다양한 지역 맞춤형 봉사프로그램을 매월 실시할 계획이다.

현대제철 당진에 새로운 문화예술 공간을 조성

현대제철은 5월 11일 당진 삼선산수목원에서 철제공공예술 프로젝트 'H-Steel ATELIER' 쇼케이스를 개최하고

이곳에 설치된 공공예술조형물을 공개했다.

현대제철은 지난해 말 '철의 숲을 디자인하라'는 주제로 당진 삼선산수목원에 어울리는 자연친화적인

디자인과 그늘이 있는 쉼터 형태의 조형물을 공모했다.

시민들이 앉아서 휴식을 취하고 체험할 수 있는 '참여형 작품'을 온라인 투표 공개심사를 통해 시민들의

공감대와 공정성을 높여 선정했다.

이러한 과정을 거쳐 선정된 김영아 작가의 '철, 새싹을 틔우다', 이천희 작가의 '쉼표',

김두원 작가의 '아다지오', 안정현 작가의 '철의 꽃:Petal Steel'등 4개의 작품은 삼선산수목원 내

피크닉장에 설치됐다. 또 전망대에 설치한 '산을 닮은, 산을 담은 희망전망대'는 당진시의 어린이들이

작품에 직접 참여해 삼선산수목원에서 보고 느낀 자연의 모습을 바닥 패턴에 담아 의미를 더 했다.

'철의 숲'이 조성된 당진시의 삼선산수목원은 당진시민들의 쾌적한 휴식공간 제공을 위해 조성된 곳으로

1,060종에 달하는 수목유전자원이 서식하며 계절별로 다양한 경관을 연출하는 곳이다.

오명석 현대제철 당진제철소장은 이날 인사말을 통해"이번 프로젝트는 현대제철 임직원들이

자발적으로 모금한 금액에 회사가 동일한 금액을 출연해 조성된 매칭그랜트 기금을 바탕으로

진행된 사회공헌 사업"이라며 "현대제철 임직원들의 이 같은 마음이 전해져 더 많은 시민들이

이곳을 찾을 수 있기를 바란다"고 말했다.

한편 이날 쇼케이스에는 오명석 현대제철 당진제철소장(부사장)을 비롯, 김홍장 당진시장,

어기구 더불어민주당 국회의원 등 관계자 40여 명이 참석해 선정된 조형물들을 둘러보고 작품 설명을 듣는 시간을 가졌다.
