Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has inaugurated a task force designed to implement inter-Korean projects. KHNP is joining many public organizations in forming task forces responsible for inter-Korean projects in accordance with the government¡¯s order to brace for the full-fledged improving of inter-Korean economic relations since the inter-Korean summit in April.
A task force in charge of inter-Korean economic projects was formed last month at the behest of KHNP President Chung Jae-hoon, according to a KHNP official. The move is designed to establish a channel with the government to communicate on matters related to inter-Korean economic cooperation rather than to make preparations from the implementation of detailed businesses, he added.
The inter-Korean economic cooperation task force, consisting of a team head with a status of general manager and a staff member, is established under the umbrella of KHNP¡¯s Green Energy Headquarters. If the U.S.-led economic sanctions against North Korea are lifted, KHNP will most likely cooperate with the North in such sectors as hydro power generation and new/renewable energy.
North Korea has a high potential to exploit hydro power plants, including North Korea¡¯s Supoong Dam, but the North is suffering from chronic power shortage due to a lack of investments and technological backwardness. North Korea has a hydro power generation capacity of 4.46 million kW. New and renewable energies are emerging as future core targets for inter-Korean economic cooperation.
A report released by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET) showed that North Korea depends on new and renewable energies to supply electricity to households, village communities and urban street lamps.
North Korea aims to expand new and renewable power generation facility capacity to 5 million kW by 2044.
Other South Korean public organizations are studying on how to implement inter-Korean economic projects. Korea Development Bank and Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) are in working-level negotiations on a joint research on how to offer optimal energy supply to brace for the expansion of the Kaesong Industrial Complex in North Korea.

KHNP Hosts Human Resources Development Conference 2018

The 3rd International Conference on Human Resources Development for Nuclear Power Programs, jointly hosted by KHNP and the IAEA, took place at the Hwabaeck Convention Center in Gyeongju from May 28 to May 31.
The Human Resources Development Conference 2018 was held under the theme ¡°Meeting Challenges to Ensure the Future Nuclear Workforce Capability.¡± The conference attracted about 500 Korean and overseas experts from 60 countries who discussed how to secure skilled manpower, which are a cornerstone for the sustainability of the nuclear power sector. Amid competition that is getting fierce in the global nuclear exporting market, Korea became the venue of the Human Resources Development Conference 2018 by outbidding global nuclear powerhouses, including France.
MOTIE Vice Minister Lee In-ho said in his commemorative speech at the conference, ¡°Intense cooperation among nations is significant as it comes to strengthening capabilities to respond to nuclear safety accidents and developing of human resources in nuclear decommissioning and spent nuclear fuel sectors.¡± KHNP President Chung Jae-hoo said in his opening speech that nuclear power technology and advancement depend on the securing and fostering of high-quality human resources.
¡°KHNP will devote itself to nurturing quality human resources to rise to an integrated energy company,¡± he added.
The conference was directed at a broad range of experts in the area of capacity building, human resource development, workforce planning, education and training, knowledge management and knowledge networks for nuclear power programs.
The conference sessions covered four main themes: attracting, recruiting and retaining a high quality nuclear workforce; developing individuals and teams within organizations; education, training and qualification of a nuclear workforce; and organizational culture and its impact on the workforce.
