Hyundai Mobis, completing its own development of radar technology this year, is accelerating efforts to secure core technologies for self-driving cars, company officials said. The company, which has already secured technologies of eco-friendly car parts, including EV-mounted chargers, is reportedly ready to deliver supplies to automakers.
Hyundai Mobis will have its own competitive edge in the ICT sector with the development of radar technology, which is scheduled to be finished this year, a ranking company official said.
Radar is a mainstay automotive part for self-driving cars, which can detect objects inside and outside roads by emitting radio waves. The development of radar technology is considered a first step of follow-up measures to develop value-added automotive parts, including high-efficiency cameras and lidar (light detection and ranging).
It is designed to serve as an ¡°incubator¡± to nurture future car technologies and to lay a foundation for large-scale M&As.

Prof. Sunwoo Myung of Hanyang University Future Car Department, a globally renowned expert in self-driving, will be selected as an outside director of the board. Sunwoo, who served as a researcher with GM, was recognized twice in 2008 and 2014 as a top 200 prominent national researcher, and was selected as a chair-professor member of SAE International.
If Sunwoo¡¯s appointment is approved, he will be one of five expert-cum outside directors, including Lee Byung-joo in fair trade sector, Yoo Ji-soo in management strategy, Kim Dae-soo in management strategy, and Lee Seung-ho in financing.
Future car core technology experts¡¯ inclusion in the board will enhance shareholders¡¯ trust toward the direction of the company¡¯s management, a Hyundai Mobis official said.
Hyundai Motor Group¡¯s restructuring plan calls for splitting the domestic module and after-sale parts business out of Hyundai Mobis and merging them with Hyundai Globis.
