President Kwon Pyung-oh of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) said KOTRA will reorganize its overseas network with a focus on emerging countries, including India and Vietnam


KOTRA has decided to restructure its overseas network in line with market changes of rising trade in emerging countries rather than advanced countries. KOTRA President Kwon made the remarks at his first meeting with reporters at the KOTRA headquarters in Yeomgok-dong, Seoul, on May 10 since he took office.
About 20 of the company¡¯s officials that had been assigned to advanced countries will be transferred to those working in emerging countries, Kwon said.
Two of KOTRA¡¯s trade offices will be established in Da Nang in central Vietnam, and Ahmedavad, India, while the existing Southeast Asian and Oceania Regional Headquarters now in Singapore will be relocated to Hanoi, Vietnam. KOTRA will discuss with the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on the establishment of an additional trade office in Changchun, China.
KOTRA will have 127 trade offices located in major cities across the world, where businessmen from Korea share facilities. It is KOTRA¡¯s concept of providing the same services that the global office sharing company WeWork does. KOTRA¡¯s overseas trade offices will be utilized as spaces in which Korean businessmen can have one-on-one meetings with local buyers. To this end, a digital information network will be established to share information on overseas markets, buyers and nations KOTRA possesses in real time via a big data center, he said.
KOTRA President Kwon stressed KOTRA¡¯s goal of serving Korean companies as a trade support agency, not as an agency of exercising authority to access to overseas market networks. As to complaints that KOTRA is under fire for lacking follow-up services for Korean companies, Kwon said his agency will upgrade its personnel evaluation system to reinvent their work.
In order to ramp up expertise of KOTRA officials, he said, 20 percent of overseas trade office heads will be replaced with civilian experts by 2021. For instance, chiefs of trade offices in the Silicon Valley of the United and the Middle East with multiples of plant biddings will be selected among IT and construction experts, respectively.
KOTRA will launch a public process of selecting three trade office heads in May, Kwon said.
KOTRA is bracing itself for the full-fledged implementation of inter-Korean economic cooperation projects. The Northeast Asia Business Team will be responsible for making preparations for inter-Korean economic cooperation, he said.

He made the remarks after taking office as president at the KOTRA headquarters on April. 2. President Kwon expounded management tenets and the direction of innovation to conform to what KOTRA is worthy o in accordance with the demands of the times. His inauguration ceremony also coincided with an event to announce a declaration of innovation in which KOTRA executives and staff made a public pledge.
