Calls for shift from a power generation company to energy company committed to fulfilling social responsibilities

Korea East-West Power Co. (EWP) came up with a plan to create 27,000 new jobs and reduce fine dust emissions by 70 percent by 2030.
EWP unveiled the 2030 Vision and management strategies with all executives and staff members, as well as cooperative company officials, in attendance at the headquarters in Ulsan, Gyeongsannam-do, on April 19. The vision calls for a shift from a power generation company into an energy company committed of fulfilling social responsibilities.
To this end, EWP has decided to raise its total facility capacity to 20GW and expand the portion of new and renewable energy power generation to 25 percent. EWP executives¡¯ responsibilities have been readjusted with a focus on future businesses.
EWP President Park Il-joon said, ¡°(We at EWP) will aggressively explore future business to break growth stagnation.¡±
EWP to Pour 2.5 Tr Won in Eco-Friendly Facility, Performance Improvement Projects
Some 80 EWP officials in charge of new growth engine projects participated in a workshop on new growth engine projects at the BlueOne Family Condo in Gyeongju from April 26 to 27.
The symposium was designed to discuss ways of creating new future growth engines for EWP¡¯s sustainable growth in accordance with the government¡¯s energy policy paradigm shift and promote harmony among officials in charge of new growth engines.
The symposium consisted of a lecture by energy specialists, a session of sharing CEO¡¯s management tenets and management¡¯s determination to implement new growth engine projects, and a session of discussing mid- and long-term strategies related to expanding of new and renewal power generation by 2030. ¡°This workshop will serve as an opportunity for staff members to get united toward the new vision ¡®2030¡¯ calling for EWP to be reborn into an eco-friendly energy company making the world richer,¡± an EWP official said.
Meanwhile, EWP is aggressively implementing projects to develop new and renewable energies and reduce fine dust emissions for preserving the environment and sustainable development. In particular, EWP plans to pour 2.5 trillion won into projects to improve environmental facilities like de-sulfrulization and denitrification and enhance performance of power generation facilities. The company aims to reduce pollution emission of the existing power plants by 70 percent by 2030.
EWP Strives to Realize Social Values
¡°(We¡¯ll) have to make efforts to become a public energy entity spearheading the realization of social values based on the innovation of organizational culture to be reborn as a company beloved by people and society,¡± EWP President Park said in his inauguration speech on Feb. 13.
EWP 1st Public Entity to Introduce ¡®Flexible Quota System,¡¯ Creating Jobs with no Additional Cost
EWP is pursuing a human-oriented job creation scheme in accordance with the President Moon Jae-in government¡¯s national goal of creating good jobs. To this end, the power company decided to inaugurate a job creation committee with the goal of increasing ¡°good quality jobs,¡± reducing work hours and enhancing the quality of employment.
The committee is trying to expand job creation by promoting the health of shift workers by reducing their overall work hours and giving them more annual leave, overhauling regimes to ensure gender equality and a balance among work, household, family and life.
For instance, EWP introduced a flexible manpower quota system so that employees can be augmented on a voluntary basis by saving allowances and compensation for not taking annual time off. A job-sharing scheme was implemented whereby a four-team, three-shift system has created 72 new jobs without incurring additional labor costs. EWP became the first public entity to introduce a flexible manpower quota system in accordance with an amendment of the guidelines on manpower management of public entities, which went into effect last July.
EWP won the prime minister¡¯s prize at a contest on manpower innovation hosted by the Ministry of Personnel Management in December in recognition of the power company¡¯s contribution to ¡°reinventing manpower management.¡±
