Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SL) recently obtained a U.S. patent for a technology that reuses ¡°fraction scum¡± from food waste storage facilities. The patented technology mixes ¡°floating fraction¡± from food waste storage facilities with calcium hydroxide to convert solid fraction pellets into a new and renewable energy resource.
In accordance with the overall ban on spilling food wastewater into the sea, SL has been working on the development of technologies to stabilize the on-land treatment of food wastewater. Joint research that the corporation has undertaken with the private sector has solved such problems as pipe clogging, overloading and bad odors, caused by wastewater fraction created in the joint treatment of food wastewater and leachate.
Currently, SL treats about 26 percent of food wastewater being produced from the Seoul metropolitan area.
The corporation now accepts wastewater for recycling thanks to the private sector¡¯s technology improvement. Starting with a patent in South Korea in 2013, the latest technology was recognized as in China in 2016. It was registered in the United States last December, proving its technological prowess, an SL official said.
SL strives to set up a treatment system considered to be eco-friendly and economically feasible through joint research with the private sector. It also promotes shared growth with private companies.

The Dream Park Scholarship Foundation held a ceremony to present 2018 Dream Park Scholarships at the SL public relations hall on Feb. 21. The beneficiaries of the scholarship have been expanded to include 115 people in such areas as Seo-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City, and Yangchon, Gimpo City. They are in the vicinity of the landfill site.
The 2018 Dream Park Scholarships amount to 202 million won. Funds for the scholarships have been raised through two charity golf events yearly since 2016.
Expanded beneficiaries range from the conventional selection of students with higher scholastic performances to excellent students in specialized areas so they can achieve their future goals and dreams, the corporation said.
Acting SL President Lee Jang-soo said the company continues to help youth who are up to the challenge of realizing their dreams, and the corporation will be a strong supporter for them to become leaders that contribute to state and regional development.
The scholarship foundation was established in December 2002 with the goal of exploring and supporting students and gifted manpower in the regional community.
It offered 735.61 million won in scholarships to 665 students by 2017.
