Under the stewardship of acting President Park Hee-sung, Korea East-West Power Co. (EWP) is accelerating efforts to live up to quality management initiatives to realize management¡¯s tenets: innovation of its mainstay businesses, future creation, management based on trust and happiness, and customer satisfaction under the vision ¡°2030 Most Valuable Power Company.¡±
The power company is aggressively entering a new business model, dubbed ¡°Industry 4.0.¡± The vision involves innovation and expansion of businesses as an innovative leader, pursuing ¡°self innovation¡± that corresponds with the paradigm shift of the energy industry.
The EWP is redoubling efforts to pursue eco-friendly power generation and build an ecosystem for sustainable growth to align itself with the government¡¯s policies to expand new and renewable energies.
In August 2016, the EWP signed an MOU on the development of wind power with the Gangwon-do provincial government, Kolon Global and Dongsung and established a special purpose company. Under the deal, the power company is working on a project to build power plants with a combined capacity of 40MW on Mt. Gadeok in Taebaek, Gangwon-do.
In June 2017, the EWP installed a 3.4MW photovoltaic power plant on the rooftop of the indoor coal storage facility of the Dangjin Thermal Power Complex, the largest-ever rooftop solar installation in Korea. The power company installed an observatory and a stopping lane at the Gyeongju Wind Power Plant with a combined capacity of 16.8MW (2.4MWx7units), the EWP¡¯s first photovoltaic power facility, in cooperation with the Gyeongju municipal government, contributing to attracting tourists.
The EWP is working on the development of an energy storage system (ESS) using sea water, the first of its kind in the world. The power company is collaborating with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) on the development and the test-operation of a 10kWh ESS facility using a new type of eco-friendly batteries that can store and produce electricity using seawater at a cost of 2 billion won during the period between December 2016 and November 2018.
The EWP plans to be at the forefront of developing new energy industries by implementing the ESS Management Service Provider (ESS MSP) Project, a profit-sharing project designed to provide solutions on the use of electricity to companies in Ulsan by making the most of its ESS knowhow, build ESS facilities and reduce electricity charges.
The EWP is pursuing an energy shift through big data from the power generation sector for the 4th Industrial Revolution. The power company introduced a tentatively named Generation Technology Development Institute, a body in charge of the exclusive pursuit of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and established the model ¡°Industry 4.0.¡±
The power company is trying to expand into the service business by going beyond the conventional manufacturing sector by developing and commercializing power generation solutions that combine data from the operation of 37 power units in seven power generation complexes, 74,000 items per second, with ICT technologies. The power company is working on the implementation of commercializing an early warning system by building the EWP big data platform and service businesses as a solution provider.
