Hyundai Steel was given the honor as the Quality Management Excellence Enterprise at the 43rd National Quality Management Convention this year.
Vice Chairman Woo Yoo-cheol said the steel maker has been taking charge of the start of its core vision and its role as a member of Hyundai Motor Group.
Iron melted from ores in the blast furnace helps make a new auto, even as an old auto is reborn as a construction material through Hyundai¡¯s electric furnace, the CEO said.
The steel maker¡¯s history stretches back to 1953 when the Korea Heavy Industrial Corp. emerged, which later changed its name to Hyundai Steel. The steel maker first fired up its blast furnace in January 2010, another in November, and followed that up with its third blast furnace in 2013. That brought its steel making capacity to 2,400 million tons annually, including steel from its electric furnace.
In 2015, the steel maker merged with Hyundai Hysco, which completed the construction of a special steel plant in 2016 to become the first integrated steel maker owned and operated under civilian management.
The integrated steel maker has steel production outlets in seven locations in the country including Dangjin, Incheon, Pohang and Ulsan and five marketing offices, in addition to 17 overseas wholly owned subsidiaries and 8 branch offices. The steel maker has become a global steel production entity through continuous efforts to expand its overseas operation.
Dangjin Steelworks
Since Hyundai Steel developed Korea¡¯s first privatized integrated steelworks in 2010, Dangjin Integrated Steelworks has been rewriting the history of steel in Korea. The Steelworks includes both blast furnace and electric arc furnace zones. The former consists of hot rolling, cold rolling, and heavy plate mills including three blast furnaces while the latter produces reinforcing bars, using scrap iron as a raw material.
Additionally, the special steel mill is under construction and on the way to complete.
Products include Hot-rolled Coil, Cold-rolled Coil, Heavy Plate and Reinforcing Bar.
The company¡¯s Incheon Works was the very first steel plant in Korea. Its eco-friendly, high-efficiency facilities include the world¡¯s largest electric arc furnace mill and a host of environmentally friendly devices and activities, including recycling its purified wastewater for further use.
The addition of the Incheon North Port Steel Dock, completed in January 2007, has made a significant contribution to the plant¡¯s overall operating efficiency.
Its products include H Sections, Reinforcing Bar, Stainless Steel, Section Steel and Steel Forging Products.
Boasting a wide range of industry leading technologies and strong global competitiveness, Hyundai Steel¡¯s Pohang Works was only the second player in the world to develop high-speed magnetic levitation train rails. In addition, we lead the steel industry¡¯s high-value-added market through the production of rolled steel and rails for highspeed railroads. Our track shoe assembly has been recognized by the Korean government as World-Class Products of Korea.
Its products include H Sections, Reinforcing Bar, Railroad Rail, Round Section, Roll and Track Shoe Assembly.
Equipped with four tailor-welded blank units, two hot-stamping units, and three hydro-forming units, Ulsan Works produces high value-added steel pipe products and lightweight automotive parts used primarily in energy development, construction, and automobile manufacturing. The global competitiveness at Ulsan Works has been greatly enhanced thanks to its cutting-edge welding and automation facilities. Its products include Steel Pipes.
