Builder enters the power plant construction market in the Middle East by winning a huge diesel power plant project in Jordan
Lotte Engineering and Construction Co. has clinched the largest diesel power plant project in the world, which will include 38 16-mw class power generators at a price of $550 million in Jordan, the builder said recently.
The diesel power generators will be built in Amanaker, some 30 km from Amman, the capital of Jordan, as ordered by the Jordan National Power Supply Corp. The project also includes the construction of diesel storage units and other supplementary facilities.
A consortium made up of Korea Electric Power Corp., Mitsubishi Corp. of Japan, and Wartsila Development and Financial Services (WDFS) of Finland won the right to operate the planned diesel power plant, while Lotte E&C will take charge of building the power plant on an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) basis. Construction will start this month and is targeted for completion in September 2014 following test runs. Lotte will complete the first stage of the project by February 2014, Lotte E&C said.
The power plant will have a high-ratio of power generation because it burns diesel and its installations are simple to build and easy to operate. But power generation costs will run high because of diesel.
On Oct. 10, a signing ceremony took place in Helsinki, Finland, with the representatives of the consortium member companies present. Senior Manager Cho Seong-chul of the Plant Construction Headquarters of Lotte E&C said the company got an excellent chance to positively engage in the construction of civilian power plants overseas, which are considered a high value-added business, by winning the world¡¯s biggest diesel powered thermal power plant project in Jordan.
