The 2017 Korea Tech Commercialization Fair, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), took place at the El Tower in Seoul on Nov. 15 under the theme ¡°Buy R&D, Give Wing to Tech.¡±
The fifth rendition of the fair served as an opportunity to bring together several entities specializing in tech transfer and commercialization. Events were held to share outcomes and help delegates communicate with each other.
The fair was the first part of the ¡°Industry Technology Innovation Week¡± to review the outcomes of R&D activities conducted during 30 years of industry technology development and to suggest the direction of policies related to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Starting with the 2017 Korea Tech Commercialization Fair, the week had six events, including the 2017 Korea Tech Show and a technology awards ceremony.
An event titled ¡°Technology and Co-existence,¡± part of the 2017 Korea Tech Commercialization Fair, was designed to share technologies Samsung Electronics opened as part of efforts to spread shared growth awareness between large- and small-sized companies. Proprietary IP of the 98 technologies, including the one on photo-patternable gate dielectric has been given to SMEs for free. Samsung Electronics provided 41 certificates of transferring technologies in such areas as telecommunications, electronics gadgets and semiconductors to SMEs. In this regard, the MOTIE, Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) and Samsung Electronics signed an MOU on promoting technology-sharing and supporting technology commercialization for SMEs.
President Lee Sang-gyu of Neolap Covernce was honored with the prime minister¡¯s award in the technology commercialization category in the 2017 Korea Technology Grand Prix.
In a commemorative speech at the fair, Deputy Minister Park Kun-soo of the MOTIE, in charge of industry policy, said, ¡°In an era of the 4th Industrial Revolution in which boundaries between industries are breaking apart, and new industries and markets are created through connectivity and convergence, success or failure hinges on the speed of accepting new technologies through diverse strategies designed to secure technologies like the ¡®Buy R&D¡¯ initiative.¡±
The MOTIE decided to build an ecosystem to commercialize industry technologies by implementing the support of certifying new technologies, regulatory reform corresponding to technology development trends, and R&D programs connected to innovation of public procurement.
Korea Tech Show 2017
The Korea Tech Show 2017, which ended after a three-day run at the COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, on Nov. 18, attracted 122 companies and about 560 organizations.
The show, titled, ¡°R&D, Making Imagination Daily Life,¡± was hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and organized by three R&D institutions: the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT), the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning, and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT).
Excellent R&D products, produced by 122 corporate exhibitors, were showcased during the show. About 560 Korean and foreign institutions and organizations participated, and R&D outcomes were displayed on top of conferences and forums.
The Industry Innovation Pavilion featured about 190 R&D products, including systems, materials & parts, and energies, produced by 81 organizations from industry, academia and research circles.
2017 Forum on Industry Technology a Win-Win Among Large- and Small-Sized Firms
The KEIT hosted a forum on industry technology R&D job creation to come up with ¡°win-win strategies¡± among large- and small-sized companies at COEX in Seoul on Nov. 17. The institute inaugurated a taskforce for pushing job creation as part of its efforts to align itself with job creation, one of the government¡¯s national agendas.
KEIT President Seong Si-heon said, ¡°R&D helps innovation of mid-size companies and SMEs, and it is an effective means of achieving innovative growth and job creation simultaneously.
