Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) made it onto the list of the “2017 Excellent Quality Competitiveness Enterprises” in the public entity category for the fifth straight year.

KHNP President Lee Kwan-sup said, “I think it’s an honor for the KHNP to be selected as one of the 2017 Excellent Quality Competitiveness Enterprises, and the winning of this prize takes on a great significance at a time when quality is getting important to enhance corporate sustainability and secure overseas competitiveness.

“A decision to resume the construction of Shin Kori Nuclear Power Units 5 & 6 has served as a social opportunity to recognize KHNP’s technology power over the operation of nuclear power units and quality management capabilities,” President Lee said.

KHNP has established comprehensive measures to cope with earthquakes in cooperation with the government and successfully commercialized the APR1400 Nuclear Power Plant, the world’s first 3G nuclear reactor based on technology power and safety the power company accumulated. In the field of nuclear power operation, the KHNP also placed 1st in terms of unplanned losses for the third consecutive year, Lee said.

The KHNP plans to devote itself to becoming a global green leader by sharpening technologies and competitiveness, he added.

The KHNP has spared no efforts to raise quality competitiveness to reach a social consensus on the resumption of the Shin Kori Nuclear Power Units 5 & 6 project, and the power company secured expertise in the operation of nuclear power units and technology power to alleviate pubic misgivings over nuclear power while attaching top management priority on safety.

The power company has been reinforcing facilities to cope with extreme disasters and serious accidents while leading the building of a stable ecosystem of equipment supply by innovating the purchase and procurement sectors. The KHNP has built disaster management regimes corresponding to global standards to cope with such potential disasters as the occurrence of earthquakes by ramping up engineering capabilities and revamping its emergency response manuals.

The KHNP headquarters is operating a comprehensive power plant operation situation room capable of monitoring the real-time operation of all nuclear power units across the nation, while raising public nuclear power acceptance by boosting transparency in the operation of nuclear power units. To do this it releases information on nuclear power to the public in real time.

Reinforces Earthquake-Proof Facilities at Shin Kori Nuclear Units 5 & 6

The KHNP decided to upgrade earthquake-proof facilities to the strictest-ever level in Korea, at Shin Kori Nuclear Units 5 & 6 whose construction has resumed.

The KHNP announced steps to ensure the safe construction and operation of the nuclear power units on Nov. 7 after the government fully accepted a public debate committee’s recommendation to resume the nuclear power units.

AI-based robots will be mobilized to check areas of the facilities in which people find it hard to gain access, KHNP said.
