Agree to host seven joint culture programs in connection with Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and Paralympics

Korea, China and Japan have agreed to cooperate in making the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 a success, putting them historical tension surrounding the installment of the U.S. Terminal Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and sex slaves during Japanese imperial rule.

Korea, China and Japan held the 9th Korean, Chinese and Japanese culture ministerial meeting at the guesthouse of Kyoto, Japan, on Aug. 26 and they agreed to cooperate in the successful hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The parties adopted the Kyoto Communique.

The statement calls for cooperation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics; full implementation of culture city project in East Asia; promotion of artists and youth exchanges among Korea, China and Japan; pushing for the protecting of cultural heritage; cooperation in the cultural industry sector; and the protection of intellectual property rights, according to the MCST.

During the meeting, Minister Do Jong-hwan of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), citing the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic and Paralympics and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics, asked for his counterparts¡¯ cooperation in Korea¡¯s hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics. In response, Minister Yoshimash Hayashi of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Chinese Minister of Culture Luo Shugang promised cooperation for the successful holding of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and Paralympics.

The three countries agreed to host seven joint culture programs in connection with the PyeongChang Winter Games and Paralympics. They include a Korean, Chinese and Japan tiger art exhibition, a look into the three countries¡¯ traditional art context in connection with the PyeongChang Olympiad¡¯s mascot at the National Museum of Korea Jan. 26 to March 18; and a calligraphy exhibition involving 75 Korean, Chinese and Japanese painters, slated for Feb. 8 and March 25 at the Seoul Arts Center.

Busan, Harbin, China, and Kanazawa have been selected as the 2018 culture city in East Asia. One city of each of the three countries has been picked annually since e 2014 and the selected cities have held year-long cultural exchange programs.  


PyeongChang Winter Olympics to be Largest-Ever Games

With a little more than 150 days left before the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Korea¡¯s preparations for the Games have progressed in a flawless fashion, with all sports facilities nearly ready. 

PyeongChang 2018 will hand out most medals and will have a record number of participating players, said President & CEO Lee Hee-beom of the PyeongChang Organizing Committee. About 6,500 athletes from 95 countries are expected to participate. 

A total of 102 gold medals are up for grabs, becoming the first-ever Winter Olympics with more than 100 gold medals. The following are excerpts of a written interview between NewsWorld and President Lee in which he spoke of the organizing committee¡¯s preparations for the hosting of the Olympic Games.
