Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Capital to Take up Car Sharing Service
Unlike rival rental car dealers, they will deliver cars to customers as requested via apps and use Big Data in planning their operation for better customer service

25(Fri), Aug, 2017

Key executives of Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Capital, the two core affiliates of Hyundai Motor Group, hold a copy of MOU they signed to jointly enter the car sharing service on Aug. 6 through Deal Car, a joint-venture firm.

Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Capital, two affiliates of Hyundai Motor Group, have decided to jump into the car sharing business by setting up ¡°Deal Car¡± as a joint venture firm, an official of Hyundai Capital said on Aug. 6.

He said Deal Car will be able to start its car rental business as early as next month after its Corporate Identity is ready. At first its service will be restricted its to the Seoul area before it gradually expands around the country.

Deal Car is expected to differentiate itself from rival car sharing firms, the biggest being that it will go to consumers, rather than having consumers come to them. The rival firms such as Show Car and Green Car require customers to pick them up at their car rental locations and return them to the same place where they picked them up.

Deal Car¡¯s customers must open an app on their device, choose the type of car they would like to rent, the period of use, and where they want the car delivered. Hyundai Capital will designate the nearest car rental firms to the customer based on the app.

Around the world, different car sharing services have popped it.

A car-sharing service called WaiveCar launched earlier this year with a fleet of Chevy Spark EVs in Los Angeles. It allows participants to drive for free for the first two hours, after which the cost is $5.99 per hour.

The service is subsidized by advertising via vehicle wraps and a roof-mounted digital display, highlighting the unique car-sharing arrangement.

At Automobility LA, Hyundai announced a partnership with WaiveCar to provide the automaker¡¯s new Ioniq all-electric vehicle in what both companies hope will be a win-win by expanding the service and exposing the new EV to car shoppers. Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea¡¯s largest automaker, said recently it delivered 50 Tucson ix35 FCEVs (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles) to Linde AG in Munich, Germany for its zero-emission car sharing service program.

The German gas and engineering company aims to launch the so-called BeeZero car-sharing company and service during this month featuring 50 Hyundai Tucson ix35 FCEVs. It will be the world¡¯s first-ever car-sharing service featuring hydrogen fuel cell powered cars, the Korean auto giant said.

The service will be zone-based, allowing 50 Hyundai cars to operate on roads in Munich¡¯s city center as well as areas of Schwabing, Haidhausen, Au and Glockenbachviertel. The cars can easily be booked online or via a smartphone app.

¡°BeeZero synergizes two mobility trends that are gaining a lot of ground at the moment - car sharing and zero emissions - and will bring the benefits of fuel cell technology to a wider group of potential users,¡± said Dr Christian Bruch, member of the Executive Board of Linde AG.

The Tucson ix35 FCEV is the world¡¯s first mass-produced and commercially available fuel cell crossover utility vehicle (CUV). Currently, there are more than 250 units running on roads in 13 European countries.

Also in the United States, the CUVs were leased to Californians for a 36-month term at $499 per month, with $2,999 down payment from 2014.

Hyundai has had a head start in the U.S. emission-free fuel cell vehicle market over Japanese rivals like Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.
