Hyundai Mobis has secured the Highway Driving Assist HDA2, which is capable of changing lanes on highways and entering/exiting intersections. The automotive parts maker plans to commercialize the technology by 2019.

Hyundai Mobis aims to develop HDA3 technologies capable of driving cars without intervention by drivers on highways by 2020 and commercialize the technology by 2022. The nation¡¯s largest automotive parts maker has already developed the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication system and C-DAS, a convergence technology involving a driving assistant system (DAS) sensor. The related products are scheduled to be released by 2020.

Self-driving technology ranges from Level 1 issuing warnings to Level 4 full-fledged autonomous driving.

Hyundai Mobis unveiled a roadmap for the development of self-driving cars at a meeting with reporters during the Seoul Motor Show 2017, which was held at the KINTEX on March 30. Cho Suh-gu, head of the DAS Parts Development Center at Hyundai Mobis, made the presentation on the development of the HDA2 technologies and a plan to commercialize them.

HDA2 is an upgraded version of the Highway Driving Assist HDA1, which is now made available at some cars. Under the HDA1 system, cars can follow preceding vehicles in the same lanes, but drivers have to manually manipulate the steering wheel when changing lanes and entering an interchange or junction. HDA2 is a system in which the car can change lanes and enter an IC or JC if the driver uses the indicator.
