Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors are trying to reverse setbacks in both the United States and China finding new momentum from the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition 2017 and the New York International Auto Show. Those events were held April 26-29 and April 14-23, respectively.

Hyundai Motor introduced the Genesis GV80 fuel-cell concept utility vehicle at the 2017 New York International Auto Show, the 117th rendition of the auto show. Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Ei-sun and Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors design executives participated in a debuting ceremony. Genesis released two luxury sedans, G80 and G90, dubbed “EQ900” in Korea and will unveil G70, a luxury mid-sized vehicle, this year.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors released four new car models to turn around sagging car sales in China during the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition 2017. Hyundai Motor displayed its all-new ix35 at the auto show, revealing the new SUV-produced exclusively for the Chinese market-which goes on sale at the end of this year. The automaker also unveiled the All-New Sonata, a face-lift model of the Sonata New Rise that debuted in Korea last March. Kia Motors unveiled “K2 Cross,” a Chinese-type SUV model of K2, and new Pegas.

GV80 is a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell car. GV80, driving an electronic motor by charging hydrogen, is also capable of directly charging a plug-in battery. Normally, concept cars are produced for use at auto shows, but GV80 is different. Genesis has already announced a plan to mass produce SUV mid-size in 2019. “Mass production of GV80 cannot be said, but a mid-size sports utility vehicle will be released based on GV80,” Hyundai Motor said.

Hyundai Motor came up with its representative brand Sonata models at the two auto shows. Hyundai Motor introduced a new Sonata model at the New York auto show, the first Sonata model to debut in North America. The model, dubbed “Sonata New Rise,” a facelift of the seventh-generation Sonata launched in March 2014, was unveiled in Korea last month.

Sonata suffered a setback in the U.S. sedan market. Hyundai Motor saw Sonata sales decline from 230,605 units in 2012 to 216,936 units in 2014, 213,303 units in 2015 and 199,408 units in 2016.

Designed specifically for the world’s largest vehicle market, the all-new ix35 will offer buyers a family-focused vehicle that boasts a roomy interior, stylish design and a reasonable price. The SUV joins the company’s range of popular SUV models, including ix25, Tucson, Santa Fe and Grand Santa Fe.

As part of a 19-model display at the Shanghai show, the practical yet sophisticated ix35 will make a striking centerpiece with its robust and sporty styling, the company says. Its appearance is characterized by the confident front end, emphasized by high-tech headlamps either side of the brand’s distinctive cascading grille.

Kia unveils new Pegas and K2 Cross at the Shanghai Automobile Exhibition

Kia Motors unveiled two new cars at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition 2017, each designed, engineered and built exclusively for Chinese buyers. The new Pegas compact sedan is joins Kia’s new K2 Cross, which brings a bold, SUV-inspired design to the compact segment. Kia’s futuristic motor show showcased the company’s next-generation in-car technologies, with a series of interactive virtual reality (VR) simulators which allow visitors to experience Kia’s DRiVE WISE driver assistive systems.

The different zones on the stand demonstrate the full spectrum of Kia’s presence in China, including a dedicated “Eco Zone” for the brand’s latest hybrid-electric vehicles, and a “CTCC Zone,” celebrating Kia’s presence in the China Touring Car Championship race series.
