Former President Kang Nam-hoon of the Korea Industrial Complex Corp. (KICOX) took office as president of Korea Energy Agency (KEA) at KEA headquarters in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, on Oct. 10.
In his inaugural speech, the new president declared his aim to make KEA rise to become a top global energy institution.
¡°I¡¯m pleased to work together as president of KEA, which has made excellent achievements at the forefront of making the nation¡¯s energy consumption structure efficient, spreading of new and renewable energies and fostering industries, and I also feel a heavy load of responsibility on my shoulders,¡± President Kang said.
He went on say that KEA aims at rising to a global top energy institution, which contributes to the development of the national economy and improving of people¡¯s energy welfare by shifting the nation¡¯s energy demand and supply regimes and creating new energy industries to proactively cope with the expansion of KEA¡¯s business areas and changes of the global energy environment.
President Kang stressed the need for creativity and innovation, field communication, and integrity management. He urged his executives and staff members to make KEA a public entity beloved by people, companies and the government by spreading a corporate culture of creativity and innovation. He also called for a turn to innovation, transparency and integrity management as a performance-oriented entity.
Kang ensured that a transparent evaluation of performances would be made, and he also said he will provide support for each staff member to develop individual expertise and capabilities so that KEA can be a top energy agency in Korea and abroad.
¡°The world is undergoing rapid changes in the global energy supply and demand environment like the so-called U.S.-initiated shale gas revolution as well as the technology development of ICT, new and renewable energies, energy storage system (ESS) and EV and hydrogen cars, and countries are scrambling for reinforcing responses to climate change,¡± he said.
President Kang, a graduate of Gyeseong High School and Seoul National University Economics Department, passed the 26th higher administrative examination. He held such positions as the director-general in charge of resources development as well as heading up climate change and energy roles at the predecessor of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). He also served as a presidential secretary in charge of industry and energy and KICOX president before he was appointed to be KEA president. Since its establishment in 1980, KEA has been at the forefront of efficient and rational energy use in Korea, as a silent guardian of Korea¡¯s sound economic development and better quality of life.
From energy audit services, identifying energy savings potential in energy-intensive businesses, to systematic optimization of building and industrial energy consumption pattern using ICT, KEA has led the transformation into a low energy consumption society with efficient energy use culture.
In an effort to secure energy sources in Korea, which is a resource-deprived country, KEA also paved a path for the development and dissemination of renewable energy, including solar and wind energy, while playing a pivotal role in climate change response and national greenhouse gas reduction.
