Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) took home the Safety Management Grand Prize at the 2016 Global Standard Management Awards ceremony at the Seoul Grand Hilton on Nov. 2.
Organized by the Korea Management Association and hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA), Global Standard Management Awards are presented with the goal of improving global competitiveness in the industry community as well as exploring and spreading excellent management practices. Award-winning companies and institutions are required to undergo a three-stage screening process based on stern evaluation standards.
Since he took office, KOWEPO President Cho In-kook established the new safety vision ¡°Safety Together, Create Future¡± and a master plan for KOWEPO¡¯s own safety management dubbed ¡°WP-SAFE,¡± reflecting on the CEP¡¯s philosophy on safety.
On top of the establishment of the master plan for safety management, KOWEPO has been credited with achieving excellent safety management evaluations through the creation of its own safety brand by establishing safety experience sites suiting each business operation, ramping up safety partnerships with cooperative companies and establishing a safety system using advanced ICT technologies.
President Cho said, ¡°Safety is the welfare for all employees, and I¡¯m pleased to win an award recognizing efforts to establish a corporate culture of attaching top priority on safety over process.¡± He went on to say that with the winning of the prize, KOWEPO is doing its utmost to lead a global safety culture and make KOWEPO an industrial ¡°accident-free¡± company.

New CEO Jung Takes Helm of KOWEPO
Jung-Ha-whang took office as president of Korea Western Power Co., Ltd (KOWEPO) at KOWEPO headquarters in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do, on Nov. 17. In his inaugural speech, CEO Hwang stressed improved public trust through transparent management and strengthened communication with stakeholders.
He also said, ¡°We need to make a full-scale shift to a low-carbon, high-efficiency power generation regime, and we¡¯re going to redouble efforts to develop core technologies to explore future growth engines and expand overseas strategic businesses.¡±
CEO Jung served as head of the Planning Division at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) before he was appointed to be KOWEPO president. He graduated from Gyeseong High School and Chung-Ang University Department of Public Administration. KOWEPO is a energy company which produces mainly electricity. It consists of five power plants in operation and one under construction. KOWEPO has a power generation capacity of 10,972MW which is equivalent to 10 percent of the nation¡¯s total generation capacity.
Korea Western Power is named after locations of our major power plants, which are mostly situated in the western coast of the Korean peninsula, in such sites as Tae-an, Pyeong-taek, West-inchoen and Gun-san.
