The International Life Expo Korea 2016 (ILEK 2016) that attracted 145 Korean and foreign companies and about 26,500 spectators wrapped up a three-day run at the COEX in Seoul on Nov. 19.
The expo, hosted by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security and organized by Korea Elevator Safety Agency (KoELSA) opened at the COEX Exhibition C Hall on Nov. 17.
As the biennial expo also coincided with the regular session of the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association (PALEA) and lift-related international conferences, the ILEX has established itself as the world¡¯s biggest lift expo in terms of the exhibition scale and the number of spectators.
The ILEX 2016 also coincided with diverse international conferences designed not only to promote life safety, but also to boost the lift industry, attracting keen attention from experts and visitors.
About 20 people from five countries participated in a seminar sponsored by the PALEA and had discussions on the international lift standardization trends and European and Chinese certification systems. Newly elected PALEA President Graham Washington presided over the meeting and showed keen interest in the safety of the Korean industry.
On Day 2 of the expo, a policy seminar involving Korean, Chinese and Japanese lift and elevator safety management officers attracted the attention of participants. Chinese Elevator Association Vice Chairman Jiang Xiang was a keynote speaker at the seminar, in which the certification of exports were discusses. In particular, Japanese policy-making officials¡¯ announcing elevator safety standards according to stages of earthquakes in Japan is expected to be a boon for Korean elevator policymaking officials amidst rising misgivings stemming from recent earthquakes in Korea.
Russian and Vietnamese officials in charge of elevator certification participated in a session designed to introduce Russian and Vietnamese safety systems, and a session designed to help Korean SMEs expand exports. Korean SMEs called for the expansion of global market entry and the strengthening of mutual cooperation.

The expo also coincided with a contest for excellent practices designed to ensure the safety of lifts and elevators, a workshop among the signatories of an MOU, and other side events.
145 Exhibitors Display Advanced Lift & Elevator Technologies
A total of 145 Korean and foreign lift leaders and SME exhibitors participated in the exhibition. They included Hyundai Elevator, Otis, Thyssen Krupp of Germany and Fuji of Japan.
Hyundai Elevator opened a booth in which spectators experienced a lift ride with a speed of 1,260 meters per minute and elevators, and lifts adopting LED glass technology were demonstrated.
Otis Elevator introduced ¡°GeN2 Switch,¡± the world¡¯s first elevator operating on 22O voltage household power.
Thyssen Krupp released ¡±MULTI,¡± the world¡®s first elevator moving without ropes.
Fuji Tech showcased its latest technology designed to prevent accidents, in which hands are caught by the lift door.
Korean lift and elevator SMEs displayed their own new technologies, attracting attention from Korean and foreign buyers and spectators.
A lift and elevator safety experience pavilion, operated by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security and the KoELSA, drew a throng of spectators, including families, who were given an opportunity to experience the safety of lifts and elevators.
A magic show and other events also attracted lots of spectators.
On the morning of Nov. 17, a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of Lift Safety Day and a ceremony to open the expo took place. They also coincided with a government awards ceremony and an awards ceremony for the winners of the 2016 lift safety contest.
The coveted government prize, the Presidential Award went to Kim Jong-suh, KoELSA¡¯s¡¯s division chief, and President Kim Won-soon of One Shin Elevator.
