Doosan Heavy Industries has won a combined cycle thermal power plant project worth 1 trillion won in Saudi Arabia. The company also said it is likely to land a coal-fired thermal power plant project from India, whose price tag is estimated at more than 2 trillion won.
The Korean company said on Oct. 7 that it received official notification that it won the Fadhili combined cycle power plant project, for which it bid jointly with Engie (formerly known as GDF Suez) of France. Doosan will be responsible for the EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) part in the project, commissioned by Saudi Electricity Company and the state-run oil company Aramco.Under the terms of the contract, Doosan will undertake tasks from design to equipment manufacturing and installment, and to pilot operation sequentially until November 2019. The power plant will supply electric power and heat to Fadhili Gas Complex located 85 kilometers northwest of Jubail Port in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. The plant will have a capacity of 1,519 megawatts, equivalent to the electricity consumed by 1.5 million people.
The new order brought the Korean company¡¯s total orders to around 11.4 trillion won thus far in 2016, the company said.
The latest success is meaningful in that it comes in a region in which large-scale infrastructure construction orders have been put on hold in recent years. For this reason, competition was fierce among construction companies across the world. Rival bidders to Doosan Heavy Industries were the consortium of GE and ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia, Japan's JGC and Mitsubishi, and a Korean consortium led by Samsung C&T.
Korean companies are on a roll in the region. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Chairman & CEO Geewon Park), the world¡¯s No. 1 player in seawater desalination, won a project to construct the Reverse Osmosis (RO) seawater desalination plant in Kuwait.
Doosan announced that it had received the Notice of Award for Phase 1 of the RO type plant project, which is worth about 450 billion won, in Doha from the Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW) of Kuwait.
The plant, which is to be constructed in Doha, some 20km east of Kuwait City, will produce about 270,000 tons of freshwater daily, a volume enough for 900,000 residents to consume concurrently. Doosan will conduct the project through the EPC method, in which it will comprehensively execute the entire process ranging from design and supply of materials and equipment, to construction and commissioning, and will start freshwater production in November 2018. The company is also set to conduct operation and maintenance work until November 2023 after completion of the project.
Seokwon Yun, CEO of the Water BG, said, ¡°As the Company has won the large-scale seawater desalination plant project in the Middle East, one of our key markets, after acquiring the Escondida desalination plant project in Chile back in 2013, the largest RO type plant in Latin America, we have further consolidated our strong lead in the large-scale RO project market.¡±
He added, ¡°We will continue to expand our presence in the world¡¯s RO type seawater desalination market, which is estimated at $45 billion through 2020.¡±
