Hyundai affiliate wins Korea National Quality Award in the manufacturing sector as a leading auto parts maker in Korea
Hyundai Mobis Co., a major affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group, won the Korea National Quality Award in the area of manufacturing this year. What began as Hyundai Precision has grown to become a leading car parts maker with three plants around the country and overseas producing modules and core auto parts, establishing itself as a global enterprise.
The company first produced a chassis module for a complete auto production line and followed it up with modules for seats and frontends.
With the completion of its plant in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, the company began to produce the antilock brake system, expanding its production of core auto parts. Right now, the company is engaged in the development and production of auto parts for safety and conveniences such as brakes, steering wheels, lamps, and intelligent safety auto parts.
In September, the company signed a contract with GM to supply $160 million worth of ICS, a system that controls diverse multimedia equipment in automobiles, which are exclusively owned by the top automakers in the world. It is the fourth contract for Hyundai Mobis with GM to supply such auto parts since 2008, since the company is the only auto parts maker in Korea that has the technologies to produce the ICS parts.
The company has been supplying 60 key auto parts including intelligent battery sensors, headlamps, and rear lamps to a number of major automakers including Chrysler, BMW, Daimler (Benz), Mitsubishi, and Subaru, and as a result, Automotive News, a popular U.S. auto magazine, selected Hyundai Mobis as one of the eight key auto parts makers in the world.
From its founding under the name Hyundai Precision Industry in 1977, Mobis went on to become the world¡¯s top container producer. After turning its focus to the automobile sector in the 1990s, Mobis produced recreational vehicles like the Galloper and Santamo to create the ¡°Galloper Legend.¡±
After surviving the financial crisis of the late 1990s, Mobis redesigned itself as an auto parts specialist. The company started to produce and supply chassis modules for Hyundai Motor and took the after-sales service parts businesses from both Hyundai and Kia motors in late 1999, at which time it was renamed Mobis, kicking off the new millennium.
The year 2000 was not only the year the company changed its name, but it was also the year when Mobis became the biggest automotive parts company in charge of after-sales service parts distribution, auto parts export, and module manufacturing. The company merged with Hyundai Autonet in 2009. The future technologies for automobiles need a systematic integration of both mechanical and electronic parts and Mobis is now prepared to take on the future. As a leader in the auto parts sector in Korea, Mobis¡¯ next goal is to become one of the global top five auto parts makers.
Mobis is laying the foundation as a global auto parts expert through its commitment to after-sales service parts, module, and core parts manufacturing, as well as parts exports around the globe. Since the first chassis modules rolled out in October 1999, Mobis has been supplying modules for most Hyundai and Kia car models. The beauty of the module manufacturing business, without a doubt, comes from design. In order to bring the best design into a car model, Mobis has been pushing hard to secure the best technologies for module parts production based on its own independent research and development, as well as technological partnerships with global players.
The advanced airbag, ABS and ESC systems, promise the drivers¡¯ safety and happiness, and Mobis is playing a big part in boosting the competitive edge of the overall auto parts industry in Korea. As the next generation car models are developing around the electronics area, Mobis is concentrating its core competency on securing automotive electronic technologies.
