Asiana Airlines became a member of Star Alliance, the world¡¯s largest airlines alliance in 2002, extending its sky network to six continents. The alliance had 28 airlines as its members serving routes covering Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Central and Latin America and Oceania, connecting 1,330 cities in those regions.
Passengers on Asiana planes can be transferred to the planes of any member air carriers of the alliance and can fly to the cities that Asiana does not fly to, including Greece, Belgium, Poland, Croatia, Swiss, Portugal, Northern Europe¡¯s Scandinavia, Canada, Brazil, Panama, New Zealand, South Africa, and many more.
In addition to flight transfers, passengers on Asiana planes can get bonus mileage, rights to access the comforts of the airport lounges of the Alliance member airlines at major airports in the world, which is all services similar to those offered by Asiana.
The alliance also secured its own terminal at Heathrow Airport in London for its member airlines, and Asiana secured its own terminal in the new terminal at the airport.
The airline has also been strengthening its competitiveness with its own strategy by extending its own mid- to long-range flight routes. As of this year, the airline was operating 19 mid- and long-range routes connecting such important regions as North America, Europe, Oeania, and Southeast Asia. The cities in North America that Asiana planes fly to include Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Chicago, and Honolulu and Los Angeles. The airline also services a number of major cities in Europe, including Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rome and Istanbul.
Asiana has been pressing a number of ¡°super passenger jets¡± into service, including six A380 planes, serving major destinations as New York, and Los Angeles. More destinations will be put into service for popular air routes.
Asiana Airlines Inc. is one of South Korea's two major airlines, along with Korean Air. Asiana has its headquarters in Asiana Town building in Seoul.
The airline has its domestic hub at Gimpo International Airport and its international hub at Incheon International Airport (70 kilometers from central Seoul). As a member of Star Alliance, it operates 14 domestic and 90 international passenger routes, and 27 cargo routes throughout Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania.
As of December 2014, the company employed 10,183 people. The majority of Asiana's pilots, ground staff, and flight attendants are based in Seoul. Asiana Airlines is the largest shareholder in Air Busan, a low-cost regional carrier joint-venture with Busan Metropolitan City.
Asiana is also currently an official sponsor of the South Korea national football team and The Presidents Cup 2015.
Alliance is the second-largest global alliance by passenger count with 641.1 million, after SkyTeam (665.4million) and ahead of Oneworld (557.4 million). Its slogan is "The Way The Earth Connects."
Star Alliance's 27 member airlines operate a fleet of approximately 4,657 aircraft, serve more than 1,330 airports in 192 countries and carry 641.1 million passengers per year on more than 18,500 daily departures.
Star Alliance Gold status is given to customers who have reached a higher level of a member airline's frequent-flyer program. Benefits are priority reservations wait-listing, airport stand-by and check-in and baggage handling; an additional checked luggage allowance of 20 kg (or one extra piece, where the piece rule applies), and access to designated Star Alliance Gold lounges the day and place of departure with the presentation of a Star Alliance boarding pass.
