The Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning (MSIP), the Ministry of the Interior and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) jointly hosted a ceremony to mark the 5th anniversary of Information Protection Day at The-K Hotel Seoul in Yangjae-dong on July 13.

In 2012, the government designated Information Protection Day to inform people of the significance of information security and make information protection efforts part of the general public¡¯s daily lives.

In July 2007, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, a series of coordinated cyber attacks against major government, news media and financial websites in Korea, prompted the government to designate Information Protection Day, said Oh Nam-ho, team chief of Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). The nation marks the Month of Information Protection every July and Information Protection Day is on the second Wednesday of that month.  The theme of the anniversary event was dubbed ¡°Korea¡¯s Information Protection, a New Leap Forward Unfolding the Future.¡± The nation marked the anniversary with a variety of events, including an international seminar on information protection, a job fair on data security personnel, and an exhibition of products and research outcomes for information protection.

Among about 500 people on hand at the ceremony were MSIP Vice Minister Choi Jae-yoo; Chairman Shin Sang-jin of the National Assembly Science; ICT & Future Planning, Broadcasting and Communications Committee; Korea Communications Commissioner Lee Ki-joo; dignitaries from several walks of life; members of civic organizations; and the general public.

In her video message, President Park Geun-hye said, ¡°As all industries are converged with ICT, dangerous factors, now limited to cyber space, have been creeping into industrial fields and the whole of people¡¯s daily lives, making the nation a cyber safety country as the government¡¯s very significant task.¡±

The president called for the strengthening of cyber response regimes and capacities to protect information on the part of the whole of Korean society, as well as nurturing the information protection industry as a next-generation growth engine.

Thirteen individuals and one organization were honored during the ceremony with diverse orders and prizes in recognition of their contributions to the development of the information protection industry.

The Order of Service Merit, Green Stripe went to Prof. Lee Im-young of Soonchunhyang University.

Chair-Professor Lee Jae-woo of Dongkuk University spoke on the past, present and future of protecting information at an international conference on information protection. Marc Van Zadelfoff, vice president of strategy and product management at IBM Security, lectured on the advancing of cyber security using artificial intelligence.

The 2016 Information Protect Job Fair that took place at The-K Hotel Seoul on July 13 attracted about 700 job seekers, as well as major information security firms.

Twenty-six companies and organizations had job openings in four areas, including security development, security policies and accident response. The National Police Agency Cyber Bureau also participated in the fair to hire people for cyber investigations.

The job fair was hosted by the MSIP and jointly organized by KISA and the Korea Information Security Industry Association (KISIA). The job fair coincided with an event to offer mentoring services to start-up hopefuls at the Start-up Mentoring Pavilion. The companies¡¯ representatives were given one-on-one consulting on technology and management difficulties they experience at an initial stage of their development. The job fair will last until the end of this year to offer a wide range of services, including hiring.

Twelve products, including bio certification and encoding solutions, were displayed during an exhibition of products and research outcomes for information protection.
