Kt¡¯s theme at World IT Show 2016 was ¡°A Look Ahead at 5G Telecom Olympics Based Perfect Network.¡±

Kt¡¯s booth was divided into three zones: perfect network, a look ahead at 5G Olympics, and smart IoT.

The exhibition, hosted by the Ministry of ICT, Science and Future Planning (MSIP), took place at KOEX from May 17 to 20.

Spectators at the exhibition were given an opportunity to experience the latest network technology, and the ¡°5G Olympics¡± via virtual reality as well as the IoT technologies designed to realize a ¡°smart lifestyle.¡±

The ¡°Perfect Network¡± zone demonstrated ¡°Drone LTE,¡± ¡°Backpack LTE,¡± and ¡°Satellite LTE¡± technologies via sculptures to form rapid telecom networks in the case of an emergency. The Drone LTE is a new mobile base-station concept using a drone carrying key base station equipment. The technology is the smallest, lightest most-mobile base station aboard a plane. It weighs 9 kg. The ¡°Satellite¡± LTE is available in such areas as remote islands in which copper cables, microwave transmission networks and other systems cannot be installed. Kt has demonstrated diverse services that can be realized via a 5G technology with 25Gbps.

Kt is the official telecom service provider of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics following the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, and the World Championships Daegu 2011. Kt plans to install 35,000 communications cable lines based on 1,391 km-long communications cable conduits in the Olympic venues as well as mobile telecom networks capable of handling up to 250,000 terminals simultaneously. The 5G Olympics Zone displayed experiences that spectators can experience during the Olympics. Spectators witnessed ski jumps, bobsleighs, music videos and Olleh TV mobile via head mounted display (HMD) VR gadgets. Kt demonstrated the popular technology at the World Mobile Congress 2016 at Barcelona, Spain, this past February.

The ¡°Smart IoT¡± Zone displayed such services as the ¡°IoT Home¡± Service in which IoT gadgets can be controlled via smartphone apps like ¡°Smart Plug,¡± ¡°Digital Door Lock,¡± and ¡°Robot Cleaner.¡±

Kt obtains International Standard for Biometric Authentication

Kt announced that it obtained FIDO (Fast Identify Online) certification, which is an international standard for biometric authentication.

FIDO allows rapid and accurate personal identification online by authenticating biometric data based on users¡¯ fingerprints, iris, face, voice recognition, and etc., without a complicated password. The certification is awarded by the FIDO Alliance.

In particular, FIDO is used for well-known smart payment services in and outside Korea like PayPal, Ali Pay, and Samsung Pay. FIDO provides higher level of security as it generates a new type of authentication information by encrypting biometric data, instead of just storing and using it, to protect the personal information of users.

Kt joined interoperability testing led by the FIDO Alliance in March and verified compliance with FIDO¡¯s international standards for the entire areas including server, clients (iOS/Android) and authenticator/ASM to obtain the FIDO certification.

With this, Kt laid a foundation for rapidly responding to the next-generation authentication market, which requires safer and more convenient solutions. In addition, Kt can enhance the reliability of its new authentication service, which is currently being prepared, based on the secured interoperability with FIDO-certified solutions and services in and outside the country.

Kt plans to launch the new FIDO-based authentication services from the second half of the year for customers who use online authentication, login, payment, etc. in the financial sector.

According to Choi Jeong-yoon, the managing director for convergence service development of Kt: ¡°We developed FIDO-based authentication technology for our customers so that they could use our services more safely and conveniently in the era of fintech.

In addition to the certification of app-based devices, we will also develop FIDO-based authentication service using USIM, which is a safe mobile storage medium, for the first time in the country within the first half of this year and will obtain FIDO certification again.¡±
