SK Business Group is spearheading the development of the Korean Internet of Things (IoT) industry by concentrating the aggregate strength of its subsidiaries, including SK Telecom. The business group is also expanding its IoT ecosystem in cooperation with venture companies and startups.

One of SK Group¡¯s priority projects is to build a nationwide IoT network. In this regard, SK has established an IoT network that blankets Daegu Metropolitan City. It is the first time such a network specializing in IoT has covered a whole city. The government¡¯s designating of Daegu as a regulation-free zone related to IoT is expected to promote the spread of the related industrial ecosystem, industry analysts said. In March, SK and Daegu Metropolitan City signed an MOU on the building of an IoT test-bed to spearhead the development of the IoT industry through the building of IoT infrastructure, enhancing energy efficiency and raising mutual funds.

SK plans to complete the establishment of a nationwide IoT network by the end of June, the first such network in the world. Under the project, 99 percent of the nation¡¯s population and more than 90 percent of the country will be covered by the network.

SK is now in pursuit of the establishment of IoT platforms to explore, nurture and offer technology support to venture companies and startups to boost the Korean IoT industry. So far the business group has produced and unveiled the ThingPlug, an IoT platform that allows people to develop and utilize IoT services into their daily lives with ease. The group also plans to offer the ¡°T-Open Lap¡± in which venture companies and startups can develop and verify IoT services.

The business group is aggressively accelerating efforts to tap the global IoT market by exporting IoT products and services. SK Corp. began its ¡°smart factory¡± business in Chongqing, China, in cooperation with Hon Hai Group of Taiwan in January.

SK Corp. also plans to expand smart factories in such emerging production hubs as India and Vietnam.

SK Telecom is stepping on the gas to explore foreign markets by maxing out its IoT network and solution capabilities. SK Telecom signed an MOU on IoT infrastructure with the Iranian Ministry of Energy, the National Iranian Gas Corp. as well as a separate MOU with ARSH Holdings, an Iranian company, last month.

The deals would allow SK Telecom to make inroads into the Iranian market, which has emerged as a ¡°blue ocean¡± in the Middle East.

Iran, with a population of about 80 million, has made economic strides since it was freed from the shackles of international sanctions. Iran has an estimated 30 million households. Under the latest agreement, SK Telecom will offer Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) services on electricity, gas and tap water and launch diverse IoT businesses ranging from building energy efficiency projects to ¡°smart home¡± services there. SK Telecom plans to gain ground in the IoT business in Iran and expand its presence in the business to other Middle Eastern countries and emerging markets.
