The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Gas Safety Corp. cohosted the 23rd Korea Gas Safety Grand Awards on May 27 at the 2nd floor Ballroom of the 63 Building in Yeouido, Seoul. The event marked society¡¯s determination to use gas safely and spread gas safety culture around the country.

Vice Minister Woo Tae-hee of the MOTIE and President Park Ki-dong of KGS led some 500 attendants at the event, including the heads of the related organizations, those who greatly contributed to gas safety and those engaged in the gas industry.

The event included a performance on gas safety and a presentation of model examples of gas safety around the country.

During the ceremony, 102 medals, awards, prizes and citations were presented to those who made contributions to gas safety management and the development of the gas safety industry. President Yoo Seung-bae of Seoul City Gas Co. won the Industrial Merit Silver Tower Medal, while Dongdeok Industrial Gas, and Heucams Co. and the Cheongju City won the Group Presidential Citations. Seocho Ward in Seoul won the Prime Minister¡¯s Group Citation, among others.

President Park of KGS said in his congratulatory speech that the gas safety corp. has been doing all it can to fulfill its mission by ceaselessly working on the development of gas safety technology and strengthening its capacity with a deep sense of responsibility to provide the highest service to make Korea a safe country with no gas-related incidents.

He also said the KGS will strive to achieve its target to be listed among the top 10 countries in the world with the best gas safety technologies and cut down on the number of people hurt by gas accidents below five persons per 100 households in the country by 2017, ahead of the previous target of 2020.

Vice MOTIE Minister Woo said in his congratulatory speech that the government will address any regulations related to gas safety to allow the expansion of investments in gas safety projects and facilities. The measures, he said, will create jobs by turning the gas safety business into an export industry. He asked for a total effort by those in the gas safety sector to do all they can to make the gas safety system in Korea an advanced one globally.

Ceremonial side events included an exhibition of new gas safety technologies and a number of high-tech equipment for gas safety, such as hydrogen fuel batteries. There was also an international seminar on gas safety that included sharing scientific information of gas accidents, the role of investigators and a performance on bringing happiness to people through the safe management of gas.

In the meantime, MOTIE and KGS designed Gas Safety Week from May 23-27, which included 37 events for the sake of spreading the awareness of the safe use of gas and gas safety culture around the country. Events included an international seminar on the safety of gas and a campaign for gas safety involving a number of civic groups across the country.

Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, and the Korean Gas Safety Corporation (KGS), the only gas safety management specialist in Korea, have expanded their partnership for the testing and certification of equipment used in explosive atmospheres. Under the expanded agreement, the two organizations will accept testing and quality assessments for national and international certifications and compliance verifications, while also providing support for education and training, as well as exchange of technical information.

The new agreement, which builds upon the existing agreement between KGS and Intertek, grants customers receiving certifications in the U.S. and U.K. better access to the Korean market, while also allowing Korean manufacturers global access through the U.S. and U.K.
