On Sept. 24, UnionPay together with KB Kookmin Card Co., Ltd. declared in Seoul their joint issuance of UnionPay credit cards (with card number starting with ¡°62¡± and ¡°UnionPay¡± logo on the card face) equipped with PBOC2.0 standard chips to provide Korean residents more choices for daily payment and overseas card use.
At present, 2.8 million UnionPay cards have been issued in South Korea, the biggest number among any other foreign counties. Various types of UnionPay cards are available in South Korea, including debit, credit and prepaid cards with various functions. UnionPay cards issued this year with cooperative institutions in South Korean are generally IC cards equipped with PBOC2.0 standard chips.
This is an important step UnionPay takes in promoting the use of IC cards. UnionPay cardholders in South Korea can not only use their UnionPay cards conveniently in the global acceptance network but also enjoy safer and better functions of IC cards.
