POSCO Humans, a company set up by the steel giant POSCO, has been working on not only expanding job opportunities for the people from poor families, but maintaining their jobs as well.

The company was launched after the merger of PosWith, an affiliate of POSCO for the disabled and POS Eco-Housing in 2013. POSCO Humans has 415 employees, of which 191 are disabled and the remaining 214, or 52 percent of the total employees, are senior citizens and people from poor families.

For the mentally challenged workers, the company operates a mentoring system in which a mentor is paired with each person. The company also operates a job evaluation consultant system to provide a job for each disabled person who is willing and capable of working, along with the creation of a suitable environment. The progress of the disabled workers is monitored by a professional job evaluator on a regular basis.

Their job areas are made up of the three sectors including office work, cleaning, IT service and steel and construction. The office workers are obliged to provide support to POSCO¡¯s personnel, labor, welfare and general affairs sections, while the cleaning sector should work on cleaning office wears of the personnel of POSCO and POSCO Group, and their suppliers. The IT sector is assigned to take care of the telephone operation of 114 and other IT work. Those sectors¡¯ employees include all kinds of disabled people, from physically disabled, mental, and sight to hearing.

POSCO Humans has two business divisions: With Plus (formerly PosWith) and the Steel & Construction Business (formerly POS Eco Housing).

¡°We will devote every effort to helping our neighbors become self-sufficient and building a world where happiness can be shared,¡± according to the company¡¯s literature.

POSCO Humans will focus on regional issues such as creating jobs, supporting vulnerable classes, and improving welfare for the disabled. They also plan to expand employment for vulnerable people.

POSCO Humans provides quick and precise professional services in the office sector, such as personnel management, labor, welfare, general affairs, and others involving POSCO employees.

Other areas of focus include the acquisition of professional certification; issue of identification; reward expense; travelling expenses of retired persons; production and support of a memorial tablet for long service; management of the four insurance and report tasks; the year-end tax adjustment of earned incomes; management of a personal pension, group insurances; management of wages garnishment; the payment of a dispatch expense, a business trip expense, an incoming expense; support company documents processing; deliver POSCO newspapers; manage volunteer mileage; support copy; and print and make name cards.

POSCO is building a steel-framed house in Incheon dedicated to infants as part of its social contribution program.

POSCO 1 Percent Sharing Foundation, a charity set up by the company, held a groundbreaking ceremony for Hwasu-dong Steel House Infants Welfare Center in Incheon last year.

The 797-square-meter facility will be built using corrugated steel, with the motif of petals. As the district has a high number of low-income households where both parents work, the charity is especially focused on establishing a "kids cafe" within the center where children can have fun and learn.

The facility is getting the spotlight as it will showcase POSCO Group's capability in steel house construction. A design team within POSCO provided the Wave Steel Design technology for this project. The technology using corrugated steel is expected to boost demand for POSCO steel. POSCO HUMANS, a social enterprise launched by POSCO, will also participate in the construction project using its knowhow in design and construction of facilities made of steel.

"The steel house infants' center will become a landmark of the district encouraging dreams and hopes of every child who attends it. I am glad that POSCO Group can make a contribution thanks to its advanced technology," said Lee Young-hoon, a vice president of the steelmaker.
