CJ Korea Express finally got its wish fulfilled after Everland agreed to let the transportation company run the CJ Korea Express Super Race Championship in the Yongin Speedway, which is located inside the theme park.

The affiliate of CJ Group will host its first race at Everland’s Yongin Speedway in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on April 23 and 24 for the first time in eight years. It will be the first opening race for the speedway with the 7th round scheduled for Sept. 24 and 25. The race was the first and the largest motor car race ever held in Korea. CJ Group hosted the sports car races so far, but CJ Korea Express, a major affiliate of the group, will take over as the host of the event.

Those in the motor sports industry have wanted to see the motor race held at the speedway since 2008 when it was closed for repairs, but it didn’t reopen until this year.

During that time, races took place at the Yongam International Circuit in Yongam, South Jeolla Province, and the Inje Stadium in Inje, Gangwon Province. Fans in the Seoul area had to travel far to see the races.

The Yongin Speedway is often used as a test track for foreign luxury cars imported into Korea. But after Chairman Lee Kun-hee left the management of Samsung Group temporarily from May 2009, things changed. 

Many in race circles felt that Everland allowed cars to use the track at Everland for races because of Chairman Lee’s love for sports cars. 

Also, the fact that CJ Korea Express was finally allowed to hold races at the speedway inside Everland shows that relations between CJ and Samsung have become amicable.

Relations between CJ and Samsung soured after former Chairman Lee Maeng-hee of Cheil Fertilizer sued his younger brother, Chairman Lee Kun-hee, demanding part of the Lee family inheritance, but the differences between the two brothers have been resolved and their relations are considered to have normalized.

But officials of Everland said the races have nothing to with ties between CJ and Samsung, but that the event was allowed to take place at the speedway solely for the sake of the development of the motor sport in Korea.
