Korea Gas Safety Corp. (KGS) earned the top grade in the shared growth index among public entities last year for the fourth consecutive year in recognition for the corporation¡¯s continuous, innovative steps to give a helping hand to SMEs.
An evaluation of shared growth of public entities, made by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and Korea Commission for Corporate Partnership (KCCP) showed that the KGS has made a major feat:
The corporation is also out to help SMEs make inroads into foreign markets. KGS has overseas branch offices in the United States and Germany and it has established cooperative channels with gas safety organizations in 20 countries around the world. KGS, a KOLAS certification organization, offers one-stop support to SMEs so that they can obtain certificates on gas products exported to North America and Europe.
KGS has been implementing a program to improve gas facilities to low-income families free of charge for five years since 2011 in cooperation with the center and local governments.
The corporation shouldered a combined 83.8 billion won for replacing gas rubber hoses of an aggregate 403,000 households with metal pipes.
The program has paid off: Accidents caused by gas leakages plunged to 27 cases in 2015, a 34.1 percent drop from 41 cases in 2010. Thanks to such achievements, the program has been extended for an additional five years.
The program will cost an additional 87.4 billion won to give benefits to some 350,000 households. The corporation financed 17 billion won each to SMEs and households in the low-income bracket, which has an impact of creating an estimated 1,196 jobs.
KGS unveiled its new corporate identity on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of its founding on Feb. 1 and renewed their determination to become a world-class gas safety corporation.
¡°We¡¯ll spearhead efforts to make Korea the safety country in the world and make people happy,¡± KGS Park Ki-dong said.
