KT is exporting its GiGa LTE technology, which is 15 times faster than conventional LTE internet speeds, to Turkey. The nation¡¯s second largest telecom service provider is also pushing ahead with the ¡°GiGa Island¡± project to improve ICT infrastructure in Moheshkhali, Bangladesh. KT aims at raising its overseas revenues from 750 billion won in 2015 to 2 trillion won by 2020. KT announced the outcomes of its global projects and strategies during a meeting with reporters while participating in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb. 22.

¡°KT has signed a strategic partnership with Turk Telekom, a Turkish telecom service provider, including the former¡¯s exporting of GiGa LTE to the latter,¡± KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu said. He added that his company will cooperate in the development of 5G services with Turk Telekom.

By combining the traditional LTE coverage with localized WiFi networks, the GiGa LTE service is able to process data at a speed of up to 1.17Gbs.

Later in the day, KT Chairman Hwang signed the GiGa Island project with Bangladesh ICT Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak and Deputy Secretary General Laura Tompson in attendance.

¡°We¡¯ll build intelligent networks capable of improving ICT infrastructure in such developing countries as Bangladesh,¡± said KT Chairman Hwang, adding that KT will expand related businesses to other overseas areas.

KT is also to sign an MOU on the supply of ¡°GiGa wire¡± to improve the Internet speed of Katalonia, Spain during the exhibition.

The GiGa wire, using copper cables instead of optical ones, is capable of realizing date service speeds up to 600Mbps. Like Barcelona, the use of optical cables could undermine numerous cultural relics in such areas as Katalonia and Barcelona, and that is the reason why the GiGa wire is used, a KT official said.

KT¡¯s GiGa wire technology will be incorporated into rental apartments for Barcelona¡¯s tourists, numbering 7 million to 8 million annually.

KT Chairman Hwang gave details on his plan to boost overseas revenues to 2 trillion won. KT plans to nurture such future convergence businesses as energy and security. The Korean telecom service provider targets landing energy projects worth some 100 billion won. KT plans to expand GiGa LTE, GiGa Wire and other wire and wireless exports.

KT plans to ramp up global investments and have its overseas corporations aggressively engage local businesses.

Chairman Hwang cited Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes¡¯s Dong Quixote¡¯s quote ¡°Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible.¡± He stressed that the global future ICT convergence market is growing, and KT is expanding of GiGa solutions and hitting the accelerator to invest in overseas projects.

KT installed the advanced energy meter (AEM) network in Uzbekistan and an integrated security network in Rwanda last year. KT is turning to overseas projects to move beyond the conventional domestic business arena in Korea.

Chairman Hwang said the conventional method of simply building infrastructure and investing to take a stake limits growth, so KT plans to secure competitiveness by gaining operation expertise and after-sale management, aside from building infrastructure with technologies it has acquired.
