Korea Water Resources Corp. (K-water) should strive to be a leading global company for all water-related issues by coping with changes from the Paris Climate Agreement, said K-water President Choi Gye-woon, particularly on energy policies signed last November and the changes in the paradigm based on the Nexus water-energy base.
Choi made the remarks on Jan. 4 at the new year ceremony for the company.
The K-water CEO said 2015 was a great year for K-water because it successfully coped with one of the worst-ever droughts to strike Korea.
"In the new year, we ought to be ready to overcome various changes to be brought on to us from extreme changes in the climate such as floods and droughts by setting up water-management policies to widen the areas of the responsibility for K-water, a professional water management company,¡± Choi said.
K-water will develop a ¡°soft power¡± system, a future mechanism based on scientific ¡°smart¡± technology backed by an ICT-base to supply healthy water. K-water will strive to be a leader in the global water market.
CEO Choi took over the helm of K-water in 2013 when the company¡¯s debts expanded seven times following the completion of the Four Rivers Restoration Project.
Choi held the World Water Forum last year to boost K-water¡¯s international position.
Choi also drew up a variety of pan-government policies to resolve the company¡¯s heavy.
He was acclaimed by water management experts for expanding the ability of K-water to use water management as a base to become a global water management expert.
K-water will develop a new business model this year to build on the achievements that it made last year. It wants to create a base for to expand the value of water and find new growth areas through such new ventures as refining sea water.
In 2016, K-water will try to create jobs for youths while attempting to help the government¡¯s three-year reform plan to spur the economic growth.
K-water has been a national leader in Korea¡¯s economic development and living standard improvements through efficient water resource management since its foundation in 1967.
Through the operation of 16 multi-purpose dams and integrated regional water supply systems, K-water manages half the national water supply facility capacity. ¡°As well, we operate 22 local water supply systems and are participating in the sewerage business,¡± K-water said.
Moreover, along with developing eco-friendly water front cities, K-water provides total water service that is unparalleled in the world as Korea¡¯s representative state-owned water managing company.
In addition, as the No. 1 new renewable energy company in Korea, K-water provides 25 percent of the national facility capacity of renewable energy. The world¡¯s largest tidal power plant, the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Plant, and the world first floating photovoltaic power generation system, the Hapcheon Dam Solar Power Generating System, are renowned examples of K-water¡¯s role in renewable energy.
Dr. Choi Gye-woon was appointed as new chief executive officer of Korea Water Resources Corporation in November 2013. He received Ph.D in hydraulic engineering from Colorado State University. He specialized in Hydraulics, water and wastewater engineering, and research of Smart Water Grid.
