Korea Gas Technology Corp., set up in 1993 to maintain the safety of gas installations and trust in gas supplies, has been the top company when it comes to the development of technologies for natural gas installations and natural gas imports, especially for equipment and technologies related to engineering.
The high-level technologies are needed to handle the import of LNG from abroad, because its low temperature of minus 162 Celsius and special high pressure of 7Mpa must be maintained with special equipment.
The company has been maintaining various equipment that is needed in key areas such as storage tanks, delivery and transportation to ensure a stable supply of LNG to consumers.
LNG supply pipelines around the country add up to 4,250 km with 335 outlets to manage the safety of pipelines. The company inspects pipelines two times daily across the country. LNG production bases are located in Pyeongtaek, Incheon, Tongyong, and Samchok and the company is always on alert and ready to go where trouble erupts along any pipelines.
The company set up its technology research department in 2003 to develop new growth engines in the areas of LNG installation, and it was reformed in 2012 to develop technologies for the core areas in the company¡¯s future operations.
The company also set up the technology research institute as an affiliate of the company in 2015 to expand the new growth engines and strengthen technologies of the company; including those for the prediction of the life span of storage facilities; maintenance; the technologies for LNG power plants near large cities; LNG bunkering engineering; LNG plant operation; the collection of C02 from biomass energy; liquefaction; and the use of new and recycled energy.
At the present time, the technology research institute is engaged in the development of 20 technologies for floating LNG bunkering system.
Supply piping of 4,240km for natural gas from the production base to customers nationwide is divided into 59 sections, which are checked daily for any problems in the piping and the facilities. When a problem is detected, immediate and efficient measures are taken to maintain safety and to prevent accidents.
To protect supply piping and secure safety from various construction performed around the natural gas supply piping, excavation staff are responsible for technical guidance to reflect safety management policy from the beginning/developing stage of the construction. For large-scale construction such as subway construction, a team is dedicated to the construction for special management to realize stable natural gas supply.
LNG storage tanks are special structures to store LNG at the ultra-low temperature of -165¡É; only a few companies worldwide are capable of designing LNG storage tanks.
Korea Gas Technology Corporation is the only company in the country that designs LNG storage tanks. The company designs 200,000坏/270,000坏/280,000坏 tanks, the latter of which is the largest in the world.
Korea Gas Technology Corporation completed design localization for 9 percent NI-type LNG storage tank in 2000; successfully designed 57 LNG tanks and 15 chemical plant low temperature tanksc(ethylene, etc.) in the country(Tongyoung, Pyeongtaek, Incheon, Samcheok, Boryeong, Gwangyang station) and overseas Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, China); and currently operates various projects in Korea and overseas for LNG storage tanks and chemical plant low temperature tanks.
