R&D Korea 2015 that took place from Nov. 19-21 at aT Center in Yanjae-dong, southeastern Seoul, brought together the outcomes of R&D projects the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) has been financing to the tune of some 3 trillion won annually to nurture future growth engines.
On display in the first and second exhibition halls of aT Center were 1,470 exhibits at 147 booths by 151 exhibitors. The exhibits were the outcomes of R&D projects that MOTIE has financed to develop the top 13 industrial growth engines and new energy industries. R&D Korea 2014 held at EXCO in Daegu attracted some 16,000 people and about 1,200 technologies from 199 exhibitors.
R&D Korea has been held annually since 2010 to help people get a glimpse of the results of state-financed R&D projects.
The event was hosted by the MOTIE and organized by the Korea Institute of the Advancement of Technology (KIAT), Korea Evaluation of Industrial Technology (KEIT), and Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP). R&D Korea 2015 explored and displayed the technologies so that general spectators can understand them by experiencing them.
R&D Korea 2015 also coincided with the Industrial Technology Award of the Month ceremony, forums, the ATC Job Fair, a lecture on drones, robots and virtual reality, an exhibition on R&D and design, and other side events.
Some 300 people from government, industry, academia and research circles participated in a ceremony to kick off R&D Korea 2015 on Nov. 19. Among those on hand at the event were MOTIE Minister Yoon Sang-jick; KEIT Chairman & President Seong Si-heon; and Chairman Lee Hee-geuk of the Future Industry Engine Forum.
Spectators were given a chance to share and exchange the outcomes of state-financed R&D projects and the latest technology trends.
Among the eye-catchers were Korea¡¯s globally-recognized humanoid robot, ¡°Hubo,¡± the wearable gadget ¡°Smart Band,¡± enabling body composition analyses, a navigation projecting such as warnings as bumper-to-bumper distances and a warning for lane deviation, and ¡°Phone-in-Car,¡± an automobile display doubling as a smartphone.
Also attracting spectators¡¯ attention were such things as blinds made from energy-conserving, eco-friendly materials and outfitted with natural sounds, including those of birds; LEO lamps operated with photovoltaic power; and ¡°mobile micro bubble hair shower¡± for washing hair of severely handicapped people while being hospitalized.
Spectators were given an opportunity to participate in side events in which they experienced the latest technologies to grasp them with ease and free of charge.
They also test-operated such devices as drones, virtual reality gadgets and robots. R&D Home Shopping proceeded to introduce ideas and new technologies and how to operate them. ¡°Youth will be given a chance to be indulged in science and nurture their dreams by experiencing such latest products as drones and virtual reality gadgets,¡± an MOTIE official said.

Drone Fighter Competition
The Drone Fighter Competition, a part of R&D Korea 2015, took place at aT Center, which is in line with the government¡¯s scheme to nurture VTOL (vertical tale-off and landing) aerial robots into one a growth engine.
Participants steered drones in the competition as if they were in the film ¡°Big Hero.¡± A person who flew a drone at the fastest pace on a given course was honored with the MOTIE Minister¡¯s Prize. There was also a drone fighter competition in which participants clashed in aerial flights.
