Shinsegae DF, a new affiliate of Shinsegae Group, set up to manage a duty free shop, plans to invest some 53 billion won in tourism infrastructure and commercial facilities over the next five years to give a boost to tourism in the heart of Seoul.
Recently Shinsegae won a license to operate a duty free shop in the area.
The new company set up exclusively to run the duty free shop will also help the Messa Building next to Shinsegae Department Store in Myeong-dong to have sales counters at the Power of Domestic Product Center for domestic commodities, most of them produced by SMEs.
The company will use the new annex to the department store and the Messa Building for the operation of the new duty free shop and tourism facilities. In the first half of next year, all 14 floors of the two buildings (33,400 sq. meters in space) will have facilities dedicated to the duty free store.
From 2018, a new hotel built next to the Messa Building and the building used by SC Bank, which was taken over by the group in March will also be used to be part of the Shinsegae Town that the group plans to build with the department store at its center.
The group will implement 15 programs to promote tourism and 10 tourism infrastructure improvement projects under the ¡°Re-Shape¡± program, which is seen generating 5.9 trillion won worth of tourism businesses when they are completed while re-shaping the heart of Seoul.
President Sung Young-mok said the strategy is to make the center of Seoul like New York¡¯s Manhattan and Tokyo¡¯s Ginza by repairing or adding to facilities so that Seoul would be counted among the best tourism cities in the world, if not all of Asia. The group expected the duty free counters to be installed in the Shinsegae Department Store would generate as much as 10 trillion won in sales until 2020.
