Hyundai Mobis operates a situation room on the sixth floor of the Hyundai Mobis building in Yeoksam-dong, southeastern Seoul to look at the current status of production lines of some 300 plants in 10 countries, production, inventory and production records.
¡°The monitor at the situation room shows the graphs on the current status of the operating production lines, each item¡¯s production/stockpile, and production records in real time,¡± said Han Sang-joon, a team leader of the situation room. The situation room can see the operation of the production lines of each plant being telecast live via CCTVs. The system is designed to check into unexpected glitches of each production line and find solutions. The situation room, which controls all plants around the world 24 hours a day is one of the system innovations being implemented by Hyundai Mobis.
Of late, Hyundai Mobis has risen to the top four automotive parts makers in the world. The company made the feat 16 years after it changed into a company specializing in the production of automotive parts. The Japanese market survey firm FOURIN said on Sept. 30 that Hyundai Mobis ranked fourth in terms of sales, following Bosch of Germany, Denso of Japan and Magna of Canada.
Hyundai Mobis saw sales surge from 26.294 trillion won in 2011 to 36.185 trillion won in 2014, representing a 37.6 percent jump in three years. The company chalked up 3.07 trillion won in operating profit in 2014, a rise from 2.637 trillion won in 2011. The company¡¯s excellent performance was owed to a growing supply of new car parts and modules to global automakers and a consistent rise in the after-sale division¡¯s performances.
Hyundai Mobis has begun to innovate management systems as it is expanding with outward growth and going global. In 2013, the company inaugurated the situation room. In September, Hyundai Mobis innovated office systems by changing reports, market analyses and other materials into a database of the central server and supplying tablet PCs to team chiefs and freshmen employees so that they can be made available for meetings.
The overhaul has begun to pay off: The improvement of quality and the simplified and fast process of coping with glitches. It is owed to a series of Hyundai Mobis¡¯s winning automotive parts contracts with global automakers. Hyundai Mobis supplies such items as audio, intelligent battery sensors, automotive lamp parts and integrity censor stacks (ICS) to BMW, Volkswagen, and Peugeot Citroen Automobiles.
The company has become the supplier of ICS to GM of the United States and lamps to Mitsubishi and SUBARU. Hyundai Mobis began to supply steering columns to Chrysler in 2002. The company began to export modules and lamps to Chrysler in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The company¡¯s rising contracts with global automakers has led to the lowering of its dependence on Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors.
Hyundai Mobis is forecast to post 37 trillion won in sales in 2015, a rise from 36.18 trillion won in 2014.
Hyundai Mobis has seen its exports jump. The company, which posted $1.82 billion in exports in 2011, saw exports surge to $2.65 billion in 2013 and $2.83 billion in 2014.
It was in 1999 that Hyundai Mobis was transformed into an automotive parts maker. At that time, Hyundai Mobis struggled to restructure its business portfolio to tide over the Asian Financial Crisis and explore future revenue streams. Hyundai Mobis disposed of its mainstay businesses — including containers, defense articles and automobiles — to be reborn as an automotive parts maker.
In October 1999, Hyundai Mobis begun to supply chassis modules for Hyundai Motor¡¯s Trajet, a move to roll out modules in a full-fledged fashion. The company has expanded the module scope from simply assembling parts to a stage of integrating functional parts. Production of modules has improved fuel consumption efficiency, cut down on diverse logistics costs and facilitated quality management.
Hyundai Mobis saw production of the top three mainstay modules — chassis, driver¡¯s seats and front-end modules — surpass the 100 million mark in 2013, which was 14 years after the company began to produce modules. The Hyundai Mobis milestone means it has secured global competitiveness in the production of modules.
